Collectibles, Merchandise, TV Web-site helps fans find Big Bang Theory’s shirts

Posted by Michael Hickerson on Tuesday, 10 Jun 2008

A couple of weeks ago, we highlighted CBS’s geek-centered comedy The Big Bang Theory on Slice of SciFi.

The show is a comedic gem, blending broad situation comedy with great in-jokes for the geek in us all.   Theory consistently finds the way to find humor in our geek obsessions and get (most of ) the references correct with the dialogue and scientific conversation.

But another aspect of the show is catching the eye of fans–the geek wardrobe worn by the characters.  Fans of the series have been so impressed by the geek t-shirts worn by Sheldon and Leonard that some have set up a web-site chronicling the shirts work and where fans can purchase their own shirt.  SheldonShirts.com contains a listing of the shirts worn as well as screen-captures to illustrate which shirt is which.  The site is clearly a labor of love from a dedicated fan or fans of the show, which has been picked up for a second season on CBS.

Collectibles Battlestar Cylons for Your Living Room

Posted by Sam on Friday, 30 May 2008

Written by: Michael Logan for TV Guide

Cylon Centurions courtesy NBC Universal

This is officially the coolest frackin’ sci-fi collectible ever — and it’ll only set you back $7,900 (USD)!

Fans of Battlestar Galactica can now purchase their very own 7-foot-tall, museum-quality Cylon Centurion complete with stereo sound and a menacing red LED-scanning eye.

“This is not a mass-produced item from China; they’re each handmade, signed and numbered by me in my L.A. studio,” says craftsman Fred Barton, who specializes in high-end replicas of famous bots (Forbidden Plant’s Robby, Lost in Space’s B9 and — coming soon — Star Wars’ C3PO and R2-D2). “The Centurions are a rarity among collectibles because there’s no original model. They’re computer-generated for TV. This is the only way to see one in person.”

Barton, who is marketing the Centurions via a licensing agreement with NBC Universal, says his “customers range from plumbers and brain surgeons to Nicolas Cage and Tim Allen.” Also available is a life-size Centurion from the classic 1978-80 ABC series that spawned the current Sci Fi Channel hit — albeit with one modification. “The first Centurions were created during the disco era with glitzy, ultra-shiny armor that would look pretty cheap by today’s standards,” says Barton. “We’ve remade them with a reflective showroom finish that’s much more sophisticated.”

Each Centurion is made to order (via NBCUniversalStore.com or
TheRobotMan.com — allow 6 to 8 weeks) and will arrive in a protective crate at your front door, fully assembled.

Notes Barton with a laugh: “We don’t want any Christmas-morning headaches!”

Collectibles Six New Exclusive Posters, Five From the Lucasfilm Archives

Posted by Sam on Friday, 16 May 2008

With the recent announcement of The Clone Wars making its debut in theaters on August 15, fans once again have a chance to add a bona-fide Star Wars theatrical one-sheet to their collection — and once again, you can only get it at StarWarsShop!

And all of the following posters were recently discovered in the Lucasfilm Archives:

  • The original hard-to-find 1-sheet double sided poster created by artist David McMacken for the IMAX release, on display in IMAX theatres across the U.S. and Canada.
  • Even if you don’t remember the magical 1986 movie Labyrinth — it starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, was directed by Muppetmaster Jim Henson and executive produced by George Lucas — you can’t deny its advance poster, released in late 1985, is an absolute stunner. StarWarsShop is proud to offer an extremely limited number of the original 1985 and 1986 Labyrinth posters.
  • Remember THX? Well of course you do — the signature “deep-note” sound effect is still heard in front of many of our favorite movies these days, having become an integral part of the theater-going experience. In 1984, Lucasfilm printed up a batch of posters for the handful of theaters utilizing THX to showcase in their lobbies. In 1987 another version was printed and featured slightly modified styling.

Collectibles Wizards of the Coast Builds a Galaxy of Possibilities for “Star Wars”(TM) Fans

Posted by Sam on Tuesday, 22 Apr 2008

Wizards of the Coast is expanding its line of popular Star Wars Miniatures and Roleplaying Games this year, debuting new products based on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the new animated feature and television series from Lucasfilm Animation, and to extend the storylines popularized in the numerous Star Wars movies, novels and comic books.

The highly detailed, pre-painted Miniatures are not only valuable collectibles; they are part of a highly tactical strategy game incorporating hundreds of characters from across the Star Wars universe. Together with the Roleplaying Game, these Star Wars products give fans a truly immersive experience.

March 28th marked the release of Legacy of the Force(TM), a 60-figure Miniatures set based primarily on the popular Star Wars: Legacy Dark Horse comic book series. With this set, fans will continue to re-enact the New Republic’s struggle to maintain order years after the Battle of Yavin.

August 2008 continues another popular comic book theme — Knights of the Old Republic(TM) — with a 60-figure Miniatures set exploring the tale of the Republic 4,000 years before the original movies, when Sith Lords and Jedi Knights clashed and invading Mandalorians threatened the Galaxy. Each set contains iconic characters, vehicles, and beasts from the various storylines for a truly comprehensive Star Wars experience.

Premiering in theaters Aug. 15, and followed by an action-packed TV series in the fall, Star Wars: The Clone Wars will debut as Star Wars Miniatures in November, with a new Starter Set and 40-figure booster set — both featuring unique characters from this hotly anticipated new Star Wars property.

“It’s a great year to be a Star Wars fan,” said Sarah Haines, Wizards of the Coast’s Brand Manager for Star Wars. “There is so much depth and adventure to the Star Wars Saga being revealed this year. Our products truly allow any fan to immerse themselves in the Star Wars universe and direct their gaming experience any way they choose — with Star Wars Miniatures and Roleplaying Games, anything is possible!”

The rules of the Miniatures game are made to simulate the many skirmishes and battles that make the Star Wars universe so exciting. Gamers can recreate epic conflicts of the Clone Wars, or assemble their own squads and create all-new battles between their favorite Jedi Knights, Sith or troopers. The Star Wars Saga Roleplaying Game takes this a step further, allowing players create their own characters within the Star Wars universe.

Wizards of the Coast has a rich catalog of Miniatures based on the original Star Wars saga and expanded universe, including a recently released set that previewed characters from the highly anticipated video game, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed(TM). In addition to the quality sculpting, each new character includes a stat card, detailing their strengths and abilities and giving an unprecedented level of knowledge on this exciting new Star Wars era.

Collectibles, Star Wars Court to rule on stormtrooper costumes

Posted by Michael Hickerson on Tuesday, 8 Apr 2008

The iconic stormtrooper costumes from the Star Wars franchise are at the heart of a lawsuit being heard by the UK’s high court this week. One of the designers who helped create the costumes, Andrew Ainsworth, is being sued by George Lucas for £10m for making and selling replica costumes to collectors. Ainsworth is counter-suing for a piece of the pie that is the Star Wars empire.

According to reports, Ainsworth created the first thirty-five helmets for the original Star Wars back in 1976 and sold the first 50 to Lucas for £35 each. In 2004, Ainsworth found an original helmet in his home and began producing costumes for sales to fans.

“As far as I am concerned I am the original maker and I’m using the original molds,”" said Ainsworth.

A spokesman for Lucas Licensing said: “We would never want to discourage fans from showcasing their enthusiasm for the movies. However, anyone who tried to profit from using our copyrights and trademarks without authorization … we will go after them.”

A court in California has already ruled in favor of Lucas in the matter but because Ainsworth is UK citizen, the British high court will have to enforce the order.

Either that or George will have to call upon his old pal Darth Vader to look into this.
