I am a fan of stunt work; the action, the precision that goes into preparing fights and car stunts, it is truly a wonder. A few of us used to stay to watch the end credits just to see who was on the stunt team, and we became familiar with a bunch of families working stunts. We knew who would show up for car stunts, and who would show up for horse stunts.
“The Fall Guy” TV series (1981-86) was a hoot, silly entertainment, but a fun show. With the release of this movie adaptation, it dawns on me that I don’t think I’ve ever seen “The Fall Guy” in syndicated reruns. I’m mildly curious about that, and maybe I’ll dig into why someday, but for now, I’m looking forward to seeing if this movie captures the same tone as the show did.
THE FALL GUY is in theaters May 3 from Universal Pictures.
Oscar® nominee Ryan Gosling stars as Colt Seavers, a battle-scarred stuntman who, having left the business a year earlier to focus on both his physical and mental health, is drafted back into service when the star of a mega-budget studio movie—being directed by his ex, Jody Moreno, played by Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt —goes missing.
While the film’s ruthless producer (Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham) maneuvers to keep the disappearance of star Tom Ryder (Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson) a secret from the studio and the media, Colt performs the film’s most outrageous stunts while trying (with limited success) to charm his way back into Jody’s good graces. But as the mystery around the missing star deepens, Colt will find himself ensnared in a sinister, criminal plot that will push him to the edge of a fall more dangerous than any stunt.
