EVENT HORIZON has always been a mixed bag for me, since one of my best friends and I saw it in theaters opening weekend. We were eager and thrilled during the movie, and I was anticipating proclaiming the film as the best scifi horror since ALIEN, maybe even better. But that euphoria didn’t last, the satisfaction and expectations raised by the movie were eviscerated by a failure to pull off an ending worthy of the rest of the entire movie. The last 15 minutes undid what was shaping up to be a masterwork, and we both experienced that betrayal of story promise. I took it personally and was angry for a week. Honestly, I might still be very angry about it.
The 25th anniversary 4K UHD box set was released this month, and while I loathed the thought of watching this movie again on purpose, the healthy amount of extras, including commentaries, was enough to convince me to give it another try. Just to glean some insight into what happened back then, to entirely sabotage that story.
Jonathan Brasuell weighs in to lend a balancing viewpoint, since he did like the movie. We talk about the movie, I fill in some info on the extras, and any resulting disagreements should be fun!

I haven’t seen it in quite a bit, but the movie was awesome from what I remember with an awesome story and cast.

I really wanted to like it, and I feel like there’s a beautiful movie, with the sound off.
