“The Quest”: A Fantasy Reality Show

“The Quest”: A Fantasy Reality Show

July 31, 2014 By Summer Brooks 2 Comments

The Quest debuted on ABC tonight, a new breed of reality show that’s part reality, part competition, and part live action role-playing.

The Quest S1: The Paladins
CHRISTIAN SOCHOR, ADRIA KYNE, ANDREW FRAZER, ASHLEY GUERRERO, SHONDO BLADES, JIM CURRY, LETICIA REYES, BONNIE GORDON, KATIE SMALUK, LINA CAROLLO, PATRICK HIGGINS, JASMINE KYLE, PETER WINDHOFER (ABC/Rick Rowell)

The show is described as being a fully immersive experience for the participants. 12 unsuspecting contestants to an imaginative realm, where ogres run free in the forest, dragons stir, agents of a dark lord infiltrate the keep, and the only thing standing between peace and chaos are one dozen very unlikely heroes. In and around this castle, the fantasy realm will come to life with state-of-the art projections, animatronics, prosthetics and art direction.

The narrative and mythology of The Quest is deep and fully imagined, and it has been designed to incorporate seamlessly with the unexpected actions and decisions of the contestants – fantasy comes alive as it never has before in this genre-bending series from the Executive Producer of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and the Executive Producers of “The Amazing Race.”

I am not into so-called Reality Programs at all. I find most completely ridiculous and so over the top from “reality” that I can’t bear to watch or waste precious time on them.
However, since we did a story on this I thought I’d check it out and surprisingly I liked it. It is completely different from other shows called reality television. It is scripted using professional actors with the added element of regular off-the-street people placed into what appears to be a genuine medieval setting and tasked to live and perform among the pros who never get out of character. I really enjoyed the episode and now have it in my DVR queue for future watching.
