Syfy Picks Up “Merlin” Season 4

Syfy Picks Up “Merlin” Season 4

July 18, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 24 Comments

While Camelot has retired, one version of the King Arthur legend lives on.

Syfy will air the fourth season of the BBC’s hit series Merlin, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The series follows the iconic legend through the point of view of the magician Merlin (Colin Morgan) in his younger years. Bradley James also returns as young Arthur along with costars Angel Coulby, Katie McGrath, Anthony Head and Richard Wilson. John Hurt also reprises his role as the voice of the Great Dragon.

Originally aired on BBC, Merlin has been picking up steam with American audiences. Season 3 averaged 1.9 million viewers an episode for Syfy, an increase of 12 percent over the previous season. Season 4 begins airing in the UK in the fall.

Yay! Silly as it sometimes can be, I kind of love my “Camelot 90210”. Heck, I love it because of its silliness.

…ugh… You’ve GOT to be kidding me. This useless drek gets picked up again, but SGU gets dropped? Camelot 90210 a.k.a. Merlin [the teenaged wizard that isn’t as cool as Harry Potter] is just as lame as Dracula 90210 a.k.a. Vampire Diaries [why high school sucks]. I’d rather watch Muppet Babies; at least they have less angst and better writing.

@Dobbin: “This useless drek gets picked up again, but SGU gets dropped?”

You do realize that syndication rights are a lot cheaper than production costs for original programming, right? As much as we might hate the reality of it, running a television channel is a business. (And, yes, SGU was treated badly by the network, but MGM has a lot to answer for as well. If the studio’s in big financial trouble, the network’s not going to want to risk a bunch of its own money on a series that may not be as good with less funding.) It’s really not so simple as one-or-the-other.

If you’d rather watch Muppet Babies, then please do. Stop pissing in the Cheerios of those of us who do enjoy the series, or at least offer some thoughtful criticism instead.

Plus, if SGU was pulling in the same kind of numbers Merlin does it is still unlikely it would have gotten picked up because of the studio SGU is owned by, and I’m not talking about SyFy’s parent company NBC Universal, but the cash-strapped MGM.

I rather enjoyed Merlin. Though I would have to be in the mood for it. I would record six or seven episodes and do the marathon watching thing.
Though I will probably taken to task for this, but I enjoyed Merlin more than Eureka.

Actually, I quite like this show and I’m glad it’s coming back. I enjoy the chemistry between Arthur and Merlin. It’s a good adventure that doesn’t forget to have fun along the way. In that regard, I rank it in there with Eureka and Warehouse 13 with a slight tick against it for some uneven writing.

I can see this show and the others Warehouse, Eureka, ???Alphas, bringing more people into the SciFi/Fantasy realm. My wife is one of those. Before, she never really understood the joy I got from watching Stargate but she’ll sit there and really enjoys these other shows.

I love the show, i’m addicted, its probably the only best british show. My dan and I watch it all the time, and i always watch the re-runs. I like it better than Camelot, because its different in a way where it focuses more on Merlin and his upbringings, as well less on the whole love and affairs. I believe the writers did very well, because u dont want to have the same story as others. Also the animation and special effects were more believable and wellput than ither syfy shows. Anyways i love the show!!!!

I’m glad SyFy picked this up. Until recently, I didn’t know that Merlin went to 3 seasons. I’ve been watching the shows to catch-up and I like them. But, I also liked season 1 when it aired on NBC, at that time it was one of my favorite one season wonders.

For me, Merlin is introducing one of the most influential myths/legends of Western Civilization to a whole new generation of young people. This reinterpretation of the Arthurian legend is something that people of all ages can enjoy and provides access to these stories that some otherwise ponderous texts and films might not.

And while some people don’t enjoy them for whatever reason, this show easily makes my list of favorite TV shows that lasted 3 seasons or less. The story lines are timeless dealing with realms of imagination and fantasy but grounded in the mundane like Kolchak, the Night Stalker (the Original), Twilight Zone (the Original), and Star Trek (the Original Series). It is what makes such shows enjoyable to listen to years after the series stopped production. And the 3 seasons of Merlin so far compare favorably to those shows.

I missed all three seasons of Merlin when they aired on TV. I caught them on the internet and fell in love. Yes,the special effects leave you wanting, and the plot never thickens quite enough. However, it is entertaining enough and the chemistry between the characters is lovable. I enjoy this show a lot and I’m glad SyFy is picking it up for the fourth season. So, if it plays in Fall 2011 in the UK, does that mean Spring 2012 for us?

No, not really. Doctor Who, before making the deal and airing in the UK and America at the same time, did something like this all the time. It’s usually, if they air it in the fall, then it would be aired about a month later here in America. It all depends on how fast syfy gets the show…let’s just hope it’s fast.

Screw you guys, Merlin is great, keep on filming! Can’t wait for more! I’m a big Harry Potter fan too and I’m not running around comparing it to this. Total different stories people. Enjoy it for what it is. Much better than that crap Camelot Starz put out.

Wow – lots of Merlin haters! This series was originally on NBC in this country and was dropped after the first season. My daughters and I love the series! We also loved the original Stargate series, but they jumped the shark long ago after the original cast started leaving (and don’t get me started on the Ori). Merlin is fun – an old story told a new way – and I love seeing the foreshadowing of the legends that I know. I hope the series continues for a long long time!

I have truly missed watching Merlin with Colin Morgan. Use to be that my family and I would gather around the television at 7 p.m. on Friday nights, and settle in for an hour of Merlin. I was even able to get my son to watch this series, and he became more interested in learning more about Camelot and Merlin. I really wish you guys would bring it back ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why start a family tradition if you are not going to continue it?

Man, do I love this series. As many others have stated i started watching this show with my kids. The story line has drawn them in too. My son is in junior high when we began now he’s in high school. I have to admit it sparked an interest in reading as he wanted to know about Medieval times, dragons, sword fighting, etc. For a single mom raising a kid in the hood and to have his interest piqued by more than hip-hop, video games & running the streets, I am happy. I hope to have many more years to come of quality programming I can provide to him. Now as far as Harry Potter, Woo Hoo…we are into that as well. Different series, but just as equally intriguing!
