Disney Confirms “Star Wars” Spin-Offs

Disney Confirms “Star Wars” Spin-Offs

February 6, 2013 By Mike Hickerson 1 Comment

We’ve heard rumors that Disney wants more from the Star Wars sandbox than just a new trilogy of films.  In the past couple of days, whispers of possible spin-off movies set in “a galaxy far, far away” have been the big buzz.

Yesterday, Disney head honcho Bob Iger confirmed that we will see more than just a new trilogy and that spin-off movies in the Star Wars universe are being developed.

“I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films, Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga,” Iger said. “We still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8, and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period, too.

No word yet on if the spin-offs will feature Yoda or Boba Fett as rumored. Iger said he’s leaving character reveals to Kathleen Kennedy and the folks at LucasFilm.

So, while I really didn’t expect something like this, it doesn’t surprise me in the least. It’s typical Disney – Rake in as much cash as possible and license everything possible, by making low quality one-shots, which will likely be direct to home-theatre.
