Kilmer Analyzes 90’s Batman Films

Kilmer Analyzes 90’s Batman Films

April 19, 2012 By Mike Hickerson 3 Comments

Actor Val Kilmer, who played the Dark Knight in Batman Forever, says looking back he’s figured out where the 90’s Batman movies went wrong.

Kilmer says that despite the series starting out with a hard edge under Tim Burton and Michael Keaton, it too quickly descended into camp and being “cute.”

“In the original film the Joker gets the hell kicked out of him and thrown off the bell tower. He suffers, and that sort of went away. Things became cute. It’s entertaining, but I think what they’re doing with the Batman films now is more in the original spirit of the character,” Kilmer says.

Kilmer says the current series under director Christopher Nolan is getting the spirit of Batman right and the direction taken by the movies is what he wished his entry in the Dark Knight universe had been.

“They are doing what I hoped we would do, but didn’t do,” he said.

I know that I’m in the minority here but I prefer “Batman Forever” over “Batman Returns”

Val hit the nail on the head with his appraisal of the 90’s Batman films. However, I still like Nicholson’s over the top Joker. But, Ledger’s Joker will go down in the history books as the most accurate and best portrayal of insane evil made manifest on the silver screen.
