Hathaway Cast in “Dark Knight Rises”

Hathaway Cast in “Dark Knight Rises”

January 20, 2011 By Michael Hickerson 15 Comments

Actress Anne Hathaway has joined the cast of director Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises.”

And we can tell you who she’ll play in the movie. If you don’t want to know, turn back now (and avoid the Internet until the movie opens…)

Anne-Hathaway101According to the Hollywood Reporter, Hathaway has been cast as Catwoman for the film. Hathaway won the role over several high profile Hollywood actresses including Jessica Biel and Keira Knightly.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Anne Hathaway, who will be a fantastic addition to our ensemble as we complete our story,” Nolan said in a press release.

Hathaway joins Michelle Pfieffer, Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt in bringing Catwoman to life on-screen.

And that wasn’t the only “Dark Knight Rises” news. After months of speculation, it’s been confirmed that Tom Hardy will play Bane in “Rises.” Bane was prominently featured in the “Knightfall” storyline several years ago. The character is best known for a story where he broke Batman’s back, leaving the hero a paraplegic.

So, what do you think of the casting news?

Yowza. Big fan of Anne Hathaway.

Did you guys forget Halle Berry on purpose when listing actresses to bring Catwoman to life on-screen? I can understand how that might happen.

I have tried to block any memories of “Catwoman” from my memory….

I got nothing against Anne Hathaway but I just can’t see her as catwoman. Keira Knightly seems like the better choice.

Andymac: Halle herself wants to forget Catwoman.

Hey, I’m still annoyed Halle got recast as Storm over Angela Bassett. I honestly think she’s one person who needs to stick to dramas because she completely missed the mark with superheros (though the writing in Catwoman can’t be blamed on her).

Ow… just thinking about that movie is giving me an aneurysm, and I couldn’t even watch all of it.

Thanks Andymac. I had forgotten Halle as catwoman. Do you realize how long it took? I’m having my therapist send the bills to you.

mich67, keira knightly, at least pick a good actress who looks feminine.

Hathaway isn’t my first choice to play Selina Kyle, but she is better then many others, I think she will do the role some justice.

I like Hathaway too, but for the role of Catwoman see seems a little too sweet and wholesome in my taste

    I’m down with this.

Michelle Pfeiffer set the bar too high for any future Catwoman. I can’t see Anne Hathaway playing the part, I would have liked to see Jessica Biel try the part. The actor I think would capture what I see as Catwoman is the woman that played Deanne in Legend of the Seeker.

While she’s not the first actress who springs to mind for Catwoman, I think Hathaway will do well with the right script and direction. She has good acting range and has proven herself willing to take on more emotional aspects of her characters, so the craziness shouldn’t be a problem. My only concern is with the action-y bits, because I don’t recall ever seeing her do any real fight work. She seems fairly coordinated, though, so I’d bet she can pick it up well enough.

At least they didn’t go with a Blond again. As for Canon I think Cat woman is kind of like Joker where she doesn’t have a single origin story that anyone can point to so that may be why different directors feel so free to re-write her story. I was thinking Rosario Dawson would have been good but I pretty much implicitly trust Nolan. I always liked the street tough Frank Miller Cat Woman and I’ll just have to see if Hathaway can pull of a gritty athletic role.

Most versions of Cat Woman weren’t “crazy” ala Pfeifer. Nolan has a lot of variation to choose from for origins if he even decided to include one.

-A amnesiac flight attendant who suffered a blow to the head in a plane crash.
-A woman leaving an abusive marriage who had to steal her jewels back from her ex’s private vault and dug the experience
-A Prostitute that wanted to break away from her Pimp
-An Orphan left the orphanage and joined a group of street thieves, receives martial arts training and only poses as a prostitute (dominatrix)
-Illegitimate daughter of mob boss Falcone

Then you have movies and cartoon origins
-A secretary who gets thrown out a window and goes nuts
-A woman granted powers by and Egyptian goddess
-A socialite and Animal rights activist

If you’ve seen Hathaway’s work in “Rachel Getting Married,” then you may agree that she has the range to really sink her teeth into Catwoman.

I think Hathaway will do a fine job as Catwoman… I just wish that they brought in Talia. I’m getting a little tired of Catwoman. And for the love of god PLEASE do Bane some justice in this movie, unlike the last Batman series. (Shudders)
