Craven: “Scream” is the “Star Wars” of Horror Franchises

April 13, 2011 By Mike Hickerson Leave a Comment

At the premiere of Scream 4, director Wes Craven compared the horror series to another popular genre franchise.

“This is like the Star Wars of horror. It’s got characters that people really love, and they hold up,” he tells the Hollywood Reporter. “The format of the show allows for new characters to come in but at the same time, these old characters are there to anchor it. It’s not like a Friday-the-whatever with all new people. It’s the same core. And the characters change and mutate.”

Craven went on to say that while he’s known for his work on A Nightmare on Elm Street, it’s the Scream series that has been the more successful for him.

“It was by far the biggest hit I’ve ever had. Nightmare on Elm Street wasn’t that big. Over a long period of time it did very well but this was different. Scream didn’t have a strong first weekend, and it went down the second, but then it kept going up,” he says.

And Craven would like to keep the relationship going.  The director says he’s open to a fifth installment.

“When I first met with Kevin, when Bob called me and said Kevin’s got an idea and we set up a dinner, he sketched out the idea for this and he said, “I have a way that we can get into two more.” So we’d have two trilogies. So we’ll see. Nothing is written in stone,” he added.

We’ll have more about Scream on this week’s Slice of SciFi.  Scream 4 opens in theaters Friday
