If you’re Christmas list included a crossover of “Sherlock” and “Doctor Who,” you may be disappointed by our next story.
Steven Moffat, who produces both shows, says that he’s asked about a potential crossover a lot by fans, but that he doesn’t see it happening.
“I think everyone who’s passing me in the streets is suggesting that at the moment. I think there are problems of doing that, because then you would say that Sherlock Holmes lives in the same world as the Doctor, and there are Daleks and all sorts of things. If a Sherlock Holmes story depends on time travel being impossible, it’s quite hard if he’s a personal friend of the Doctor’s, isn’t it?,” Moffat tells the New York Times.
So, it appears that a crossover is off the table for now, except in the realms of fan fic.
The Doctor has run across Holmes in the New Adventures story, “All Consuming Fire.” The novel is out of print and may be difficult to find, however.

Thank God
Thank you, Mr Moffatt.
Unlike *some* people, I’m glad when a showrunner doesn’t do everything the fans want. I was delighted when Russell T Davies said that he pretty much doesn’t care what the fans want.
A lot of times, fans want some pretty stupid stuff.
I know that there are people that would love a Sherlock/Who crossover, but if Moffatt doesn’t want it, neither do I.
At least Moffat has some tact and explains his logic. Davis kind of just told everyone to screw off.
Except….Davis could have really benefited by listening to someone. Surely, someone must have told him the End of Time and Journey’s End had some serious serious problems.
@Emily. The problem was Davies didn’t seem to script edit his stories quite as well as he did others. Another is that he never allowed his stories to slow down long enough to really examine the implication of things. That is especially true of season finales where he threw everything at the screen and jumped from idea to idea.
It cropped up in series one where the sheer concept that the Daleks would adopt a god-like being is an intriguing one, but it’s brought up and dropped.
And while my inner fan boy had wanted to see the Daleks and the Cybermen share screentime since I was 12, I don’t think he was really all that successful in having the two-part series two finale live up to years of build-up (in my mind). Of course, nothing could, but I still expected something more substantial.
Since Sherlock Holmes was a fictional character it wouldn’t make much sense. However, why couldn’t The Doctor meet Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and possibly be the inspiration for the character?
@Jayson….. I hate to be the one to break it to you, but Doctor Who is a fictional character also.
*rolls eyes
And what if…
… Sherlock goes on for a third season, and the doctor for a seventh. In the end of the doctor’s season The Doctor is forced to assume an human form and if i have to think a human form for Matt Smith’s Doctor, that would be Sherlock! At the end of the third Sherlock season he returns to Timelord form so the three series of Sherlock would become a spinoff of DW and link together seventh and eight season.
I know 😛 it is lame, but it’s the only way i can see the two series cross in an “unexpected manner”
