Remembering Peter Graves

Remembering Peter Graves

March 15, 2010 By Michael Hickerson 1 Comment

Actor Peter Graves, best known for his work as Jim Phelps on TV’s “Mission: Impossible,” has passed away at the age of 83.

Graves had a long career on the stage and screen including appearances in “Stalag 17” and “Night of the Hunter.”  Graves was a Golden Globe Award winner.

The actor is most associated with three parts.  The first was his run on the hit series “Mission: Impossible” as secret agent Jim Phelps.  Many readers may also know him from the hit 80’s comedy “Airplane” where Graves had many quotable lines and moments.

In recent years, Graves has served as the host of A&E’s “Biography” series.

Graves was found dead in his home on Sunday, and he died of natural causes, police sources told the newspaper.

Graves is survived by his wife, Joan Endress, three daughters and six grandchildren.

A good man and wonderful actor. Peter was the younger brother of actor James Arness (Marshall Dillion of Gunsmoke fame). Arness was also the monster in the 1951 classic “The Thing From Another World.”

Even though Peter was 3 years younger than James, he got into acting 5 years before his older brother. (appeared in “Winning Your Wings” in 1942).

Peter also directed his brother in one episode of “Gunsmoke.”
