Abrams Talks About “Fringe” Ratings, Future

Abrams Talks About “Fringe” Ratings, Future

November 10, 2009 By Michael Hickerson 5 Comments

A couple of weeks ago, we brought you the news that TV Guide listed one of our favorite shows, “Fringe” as being “on the bubble.”

The show, now in it second season, made a big move this year from a comfy Tuesday time slot following “American Idol” to the highly competitive Thursday at 9 p.m. time slot, up against some of the heavy hitters on the most popular night on television.

As a result, the ratings for the show are down, leading to some concern about the future for the show.

EW’s television blogger Michael Ausiello asked series producer J.J. Abrams if he was concerned about the ratings and the series’ immediate future.

“The mood on set and in the writer’s room is as good as the ratings are bad, which is to say, wonderful,” Abrams says. “Luckily, Fox has been insanely supportive, for which we are deeply grateful.”

Abrams says that he’s encouraged by how the shows’ ratings grow when the DVR figures are factored into the equation.  He also said that he is pleased by the critical and fan response the show is generating in its second season.

“But given that we’re on one of the hardest [nights] on television, we’re just focusing on making the best show we possibly can,” he says. “What else can we do?”

It appears that the future for “Fringe” is good for the moment.  However, that doesn’t mean the show could be a lock for a renewal next year.

So breath a sigh of relief for now, but be ready to watch the show and let Fox now that we want more in the near future.

And for more about upcoming projects from Abrams, make sure you tune in to this week’s Slice of SciFi.

    “Luckily, Fox has been insanely supportive”. Oh, oh…that sounds like the dreaded “support” for the sports manager just before he gets canned! TV execs these days don’t seem to wait very long before they cancel a show and move on looking for a “winner”. I love this show but this doesn’t sound good to me. :>{

    I agree Ken. They may as well put it on the cover of Time Magazine. Kiss of Death…

    I really hope that they don’t cancel the show. Fox just needs to give it a better time slot. It has so much potential. The X-Files didn’t become a huge hit until the fourth season when they got their Sunday night time slot. Please Fox don’t kill a great show!!!
