Rebooting established franchises is all the rage these days.
Giddy with the success of rebooting James Bond, Captain Kirk and Batman, Hollywood is eagerly looking around for anything and everything under the sun to reboot.
And now the reboot attention centers on the “Resident Evil” franchise.
A fourth film in the series already has the green light and will begin production in the near future. But according to Bloody Disguisting, Sony Screen Gems is looking beyond the fourth film to the fifth installment. And that fifth movie wouldn’t be another entry in the series but would, instead, be a retelling/reboot of the first film.
The web site says the idea is to redo the story of a special military unit who fights a powerful, out-of-control supercomputer and hundreds of scientists who have mutated into flesh-eating creatures after a laboratory accident.
The report says that a reboot would be more economically feasible for the studio because of the rising price tag associated with actress Milla Jovovich returning to the franchise.
Of course, the absence of Milla brings up a bigger question–without Milla headlining a “Resident Evil” movie, will anyone want to see it?

Whats with all the reboots!

Utterly ludicrous. I’m glad we’re at least getting a fourth with her in it. She’s one of my fave actors of all time. And the only reason I bothered looking at RE in the first place.

What I’d love is a movie based on the ResEvil 4 game.

Milla Jovovich is damn sexy hot, but I’d rather see NEW Resident Evil (Biohazard) material, than another frackin’ reboot.
Michael Mennenga says
NOOOOO….!! Leave my Milla alone.
She did a perfect job of the first RE movies and that is the image that I want to continue to be connected to it.
Here’s the problem with all the reboots.
How can you have something become iconic, if you are re-doing it every five freakin’ years!!
This is getting ridicules

The movie was ok, but it isn’t a patch on the original game. If they did a movie that followed the first game faithfully, then I think that would be great.

They need to make a movie that’s actually based on the games and quit it with this Mila.. whatever crap. The actual RE story is so much more deeper and interesting than what they established films. I want Chris Redfield and Leon.

I like RE 1&2, but three was horrendous, just like Spider-Man 3 and X-Men 3, two of my other favorite franchises. For each third installment it seems as if the producers/directors tried to go too big and the story and character development was lost completely. In RE 3 I was expecting a nice follow-up to RE 2 and natural story progression, that didn’t happen, they jumped away from Raccoon City to some post-apocalyptic wasteland where it only took 5 years for Las Vegas to be consumed by the desert with little explanation of what happened after RE2 and then ended it with a ridiculous concept for a 4th installment. I think a Reboot that stays closer to the plot lines of the games and books and focuses more on the characters established within that continuity would be good. They’ve introduced enough of those characters in the current franchise that you have enough noteworthy actors that can reprise their roles in the reboot (Claire Redfield – Ali Larter, Carlos Oliveira – Oded Fehr, Chris Redfield – Wentworth Miller, Jill Valentine – Sienna Guillory) The problem with the movie series is that they took it from its horror roots and normal people dealing with the virus and the outbreak to a super-mutant waging a one-woman war against the company. While I like Milla as much as the next guy, the RE movie series pales in comparison to the wealth of story available in the plot lines of the game series.

Why more remakes? Obviously, the RE franchise is getting a little tired in the film treatments as even a “Dawn of the Dead” / “Mad Max” spin could not save it. I must admit that I would like to see that army of Milla clones finally take out Umbrella Corp for the final installment. Then lets find something other than Street Fighter, Quake, or Doom for movie content. How about some of the sci-fi novels written over the last 40-50 years?

Im a true resident evil fan and i sy that the reboot should happen. But not the way screen gems wants it. I say base it on the games. make it more interesting.Whats fun about a super ninja chick that can kill zombies with no problem. it takes the suspense out of the movie. The whole fighting for survival thing was jus wiped out. Thats just my opinion. i think i speak for all resident evil fans when i say base it on the video games cuz thats wat we wanna see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Little Nemy says
I think this is perfect. I want to see a reboot with Chris, Jill, and the entire S.T.A.R.S. team. And by the way, whoever says Milla makes the franchise, think again and get your facts straight. Without Alice, I think the movies will play by the horror and survival perfectly making the movie perfect. When people say, “if it’s like a movie it’ll be boring watching someone unlock doors and solve puzzles” I say and I speak for all RE fans when I say this…if the mansion incident can be turned into a rail shooter, it can be done as a movie, simple as that. Let’s hope this remake actually happens

NOOO!!!! I DONT WANT A REBOOT AFTER THE FILM AFTERLIFE!!!
Its the ending of the 4th film that absolutely CANNOT be a reboot! If you guys watched the ending of Afterlife, you’ll understand why it CANNOT be rebooted!!
Zoozoo says
I completely agree with all of you that feel the movies should be rebooted from game specific story. The first movie of this RE franchise I though was dam good, but they didnt use any of the characters from the game and they steered away from the original story which dissapointed me. But at the same time I think I understand why they didnt base it off of the game, the people. Blame the people. People want something that their feeble minds can understand. The fan base on the games is large and strong. But honestly, not alot of people (i mean in all) knew about the video games so the developers of the movie probably thought that they could afford a few fans lost if they can at least triple them with that “Dazed and Confused” Milla Jovovich. When people ask for something in movies… anything… they usually dont get it.
