When “Doctor Who” returns next year, fans will probably notice a lot of changes. The most immediate change will be in the opening credits.
According to Bleeding Cool, the series will return to a tradition the original series followed for 22 and a half of its original 26 seasons–featuring the current Doctor’s face in the opening credits. From the middle of Patrick Troughton’s first year as Doctor all the way up until the end of the Sylvester McCoy era, the reigning Doctor’s mug was part of the opening credit sequence. The dissolve or fade or starfield forming of the Doctor’s face is one of the icons of the series, right along with Ron Grainer’s original theme.
However, this precedent was dropped in 1996 for the Fox TV film/back-door pilot and was never used in Russell T. Davies four plus years when the show was revived. Now with Steven Moffat taking over, it appears the show is going even further back to its roots and we will see Matt Smith’s mug in the opening title sequence.
All I can say is–it’s about time. And bless you Mr. Moffatt for restoring this tradition to “Doctor Who.” Every time I hear news about how and where Moffatt wants to take the show, I get more and more excited for series five in 2010.

At last !!! The real opening for Doctor Who it never felt like a beginning for the series until they brought the Doctor’s face like they used to. Thanks to Steven Moffet for thinking of the fans unlike Russell Davies who obviously wasn’t.

I have being a Doctor Who fan all my life when the series returned I was very happy to se it back but it slowly began to fade away to me because I dint saw my doctor who but a strange impostor faking to be the doctor the now doctor was sentimental, weak, traumatized, and it apear to be a homereker of some tipe. and what bother me the most was tha fact that sometimes the show was populated with Gay carecters somenthing I never saw in the original and frankly I dont like to see. hope the future of the show get a make over for 2010 for the better. (not for the worst.)

One thing I am certain of is that the Moffat era will (IMO) be far better than the RTD error. Thank you Russel for bringing it back, but 5 Dry Slaps for not getting out when it became obvious you can’t work outside of a formula.

Love the show, but have been a bit put off by the constant gay references RTD seemed to simply have to put in. Little kids watch this and I prefer to present this educating in my own way and time with my children. I live in America and the public schools are already way over the line in this area. My young daughter had a transvestite talking to her class about how great it is to be gay, GLSEN was in charge,( yes the new education czar Obama hired founded this organization) and it was suppose to be one of those anti bullying talks, and it was anything but. Not to mention they gave no parental notice.
Anyway RTD is a delightful and creative writer and I LOVE the show other then that.
I am hoping with Steve that he will not find it necessary to advance any “causes” on this wonderful show and just let it be the pure fun entertainment it can be for all ages.
