After “Twilight” raked in huge box-office returns in its first weekend last year, Summit Entertainment quickly gave the green light for the second installment in the best-selling series to get the big-screen treatment. Now Summit is anticipating the next installment will do so well, they’re rushing to green ligtht production on the third installment and get it into theaters before its target audience outgrows the films.
Summit announced they have optioned the third insallment in the “Twilight” series, “Eclipse” and will have the movie version of it hit theaters on June 30, 2010. That release date would be about six months after “New Moon,” the second installment hits theaters in November of this year.
Summit has not yet announced a director for the film, which centers on Bella having to choose between two lovers–one a vampire and one a werewolf. The entire cast is signed on for the film and it looks like Summit wants to go ahead and keep the ball rolling on the momentum created by the first films in the series.
