John Scott Martin Remembered

John Scott Martin Remembered

January 13, 2009 By Mike Hickerson Leave a Comment

Actor John Scott Martin, who brought countless classic “Doctor Who” monsters to life, has passed away at the age of eighty-two according to Britian’s entertainment paper, “The Stage.”

Martin appeared as multiple monsters during the classic series’ original 26 year run, but is probably best known as one of the original Dalek operators. The actor enjoyed his run inside the metal monster so much that he told BBC News that he’d like the chance to play one again on the revived series.

Martin could also been seen occasionally as himself in “Doctor Who.” He appears as a miner who encounters a mysterious green slime in the opening moments of “The Green Death,” from Jon Pertwee’s era on the show. (“The Green Death” is available on DVD and can be purchased via iTunes). Martin appeared in 110 episodes of classic “Doctor Who.”

Martin also worked on stage in productions of “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Oliver!” and “The Streets of London.” He also appeared in the film productions of “Little Shop of Horrors,” Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” and “Monty Python’s The Life of Brian.”

“John lived in Great Maplestead, where he was church warden and school governor and, as he loved people, he enjoyed village life,” his daughter Catriona Martin wrote in his obituary. “As he bravely battled Parkinson’s disease, cared for by his devoted wife Margaret, he took great pleasure in following and supporting my acting career. He passed away peacefully, aged 82, on January 6. A perfect gentleman, warm, kind and funny, he will be missed by so many.”

His funeral will take place at 12 noon on Saturday, January 17 at St Giles Church, Great Maplestead, Nr Halstead, Essex.
