“Fly Me To The Moon”

“Fly Me To The Moon”

June 21, 2008 By S. K. Sloan 2 Comments

On August 8, 2008 Summit Entertainment will “Fly Me To The Moon.” Many critics are saying this movie is 3-D the way it should be seen, and will revolutionized animation the way “Toy Story” did nearly 14 years ago.

Fly Me to the MoonThe G-rated animated film features the voices of Trevor Gagnon (“The New Adventures of Old Christine”), Philip Daniel Bolden (“How to Eat Fried Worms”), David Gore (“Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!”), Christopher Lloyd (“Back to the Future”), Robert Patrick (“X-Files”), Kelly Ripa (“Hope & Faith”), Nicollette Sheridan (“Desperate Housewives”), Ed Begley Jr. (“Recount”), Adrienne Barbeau (“Carnivale”), Tim Curry (“The Rocky Horror Picture Show”) and real NASA Moon astronaut Buzz Aldrin.

In the first animated film ever shot in 3D, three young flies set off on a courageous mission to become the first insects on the moon by hitching a ride on the historic Apollo 11 space flight.

Based on the actual transcripts and the original blueprints from NASA, the film’s stunning visuals and meticulous attention to detail introduce a whole new generation to the awe-inspiring achievements of the space program’s most momentous mission.

The year is 1969 and like everyone else in the world, Nat (Trevor Gagnon) and his pals IQ (Philip Daniel Bolden) and Scooter (David Gore) are abuzz over the upcoming launch of the first manned mission to the moon. Inspired by his Grandpa’s (Christopher Lloyd) oft-told tale of hiding aboard Amelia Earhart’s plane during her famed solo cross-Atlantic flight, Nat hatches a secret plan for the three young flies to stow away on the Apollo 11 rocket.

I’ve seen this movie months ago, when it premiered here in Belgium in January of this year. It’s primarily a kids movie, but if you’re an adult who’s interested in space, you definitely should see this movie. Besides a funny and entertaining story, it’s also almost a documentary of the first moon landing.

The film is not just a bunch of cheap 3D effects. No, this is 3D done right! Very well done. I must admit I’m proud this is a Belgian movie. And I love the sixties atmosphere and the Amelia Earhart connection.

I saw this film in a preview screening and it was awesome! The 3D makes you feel like you are really there! Walking on the moon was really cool and the flies are really cute, too. The movie has lots of heart and a great message for kids that you can do anything in life that you really want to do. I agree with Gebo- this movie will do for animation what Toy Story did when it came out. It’s a whole new way to look at movies. I was reaching for the screen all the time- especially during the three flys floating in space scene- lots and lots of fun!
