Sylar as Spock?

June 2, 2007 By Sam Sloan 10 Comments

Written by: Michael Hickerson (SoSF Staff Journalist)

42-zach-quinto.jpgZachary Quinto, who plays the menacing Sylar in NBC’s hit series “Heroes” could be in the running to play one of the icons of science-fiction television and movies–Mr. Spock.

Since the news that J.J. Abrams was helming a revival of the “Star Trek” film franchise that would recast the original crew, Quinto says there has been a huge groundswell of support for him to don the pointed ears.

“When the news about the next Star Trek movie began to surface, I became inundated with e-mails and links to Web sites where people were saying, ‘Zach Quinto should play [young] Spock,” said the actor, according to the most recent issue of Starburst that hit newsstands in the United Kingdom this week. “I started opening myself up to the idea and I think the exploration and immersion to be done with such a character would be amazing.”

While casting rumors have been running rampant, several actors have expressed a desire to take on reimagined roles of Star Trek’s greatest figures that include Capt. James T. Kirk, Spock and Dr. McCoy. While a lot of interest from various actors has more to do with how much they are a fan of the science-fiction franchise, Quinto says his interest is far more professional … and logical.

“I tend to be a type of person who acts from a very visceral place and reacts emotionally to situations, and to ‘become’ a character that is completely the opposite of that is one of the reasons why I am an actor,” Quinto said. “I would love the opportunity to understand what it is to only operate from a place of logic and look at things so specifically from that perspective.”

It is still unclear if Quinto will have some extra time in his schedule this fall as his fate seems to be undetermined for the second season of the hit NBC series, which will return in the fall.

Wow that guy sounds like a pompous windbag.

If they do cast him as Spock they’ll have to trim those neanderthal eyebrows he’s got going on. There’s no way he could do the Spock-Eyebrow-Arch-Thing with those giant caterpillars on his forehead.

    Um, “pompous windbag”?
    No, dingo.
    He sounds like an *actor*.
And regarding the problem you have with his eyebrows: Leonard Nimoy didn’t have those eyebrows NATURALLY.
He, too, is an ACTOR. And he wore MAKEUP that helped achieve and enhance the famous Eyebrow-Arch-Thing.
Now, are you going to rag on Quinto for not having pointy ears, too?
    Sheesh.

A word of caution; Vulcan mind melds do NOT require them to point a finger at your head and extract your brain. Or so the Vulcan High Command insists.

I think he’d actually be a great Spock. I hope they seriously consider him for the role.

    @tllgrrl:

I also say “dingo” and “dingbat”.
    What’s the difference?

Mayhaps you didn’t understand what Quinto was saying.
I’ll explain it to you. He’s basically saying that being an emotional type person, as an actor, it’d be great to PLAY someone who is the complete opposite of that.
See, that’s what good actors do.
It’s one of the things that compel people to become actors: the chance to explore characters that are different from themselves.
    There.
So, what, exactly is pompous about that?
Apparently you don’t know anything about acting.
I hope you learned a little bit.
    Why, you’re welcome!
    : )

I’m not getting into any flame war. I think Zachary Quinto is a pretty fair actor. Sylar was a compelling character and Quinto did a very good job playing him.

Quinto’s profile is close enough to Leonard Nimoy’s to pull off his playing Spock. His eye brows are no big deal; thats what makeup artists are for, to transmute an actor’s actual appearance into something closer to the required look of the character.

Him playing Spock would be interesting because of the contrast between Spock and Sylar, just thought I’d say that random snippet of information, yes; I just said snippet =)
