The man that took the reigns of Star Trek over after the passing of the legendary Gene Roddenberry is writing a new Star Trek book relating his many memories of the franchise he helped to shape over 18 of its 40 year existence. Rick Berman, producer/writer and studio head was handed control of the Paramount owned franchise from Roddenberry back in 1986 and finished out Gene’s seven year vision of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
Berman then went on to forge his own Star Trek legacy with “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” (considered by critics to be the best of all Trek series’), “Star Trek Voyager” (considered by fans to be the decline of the franchise) and, along with Brandon Braga and Manny Coto, he was instrumental in bringing to light the Star Trek prequel “Enterprise”, (what many consider to be the “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier” of Trek television).
Say what you want about Rick Berman, but after Roddenberry’s death, this man was almost single-handedly responsible for keeping the Trek franchise alive for nearly 20 years and has given us uncounted stories and legends to look back on within the Trek universe.
Now Star Trek is in new and younger hands with a fresh new outlook in the guise of J.J. Abrams and time will tell where the franchise will go in his capable hands.
For now Rick Berman is ready to share his thoughts of Star Trek, the franchise, the people he worked with for two decades and all the highs and lows of being the man-in-charge of the most popular science fiction franchise in the history of entertainment.
“I have started writing a book because I realized that in 1986, when Gene Roddenberry asked me to get involved in work with him on this thing, the number of stories that I have accumulated is amazing.” Berman said.
The book currently has no title, but Berman told TrekMovie.com in a recent interview that it will tell the whole story “warts and all.”
No date has been set for its release to bookstores so stay tuned to Slice of SciFi for updates.
