In an interview mentioned on BetterThanFudge.com, director Christopher Nolan offered up a sound bite about why he chose the title “Dark Knight” and some scant detail about what we can expect from its main villian in the sequel to “Batman Begins.”
“The title has been chosen very specifically. It’s quite important to the film,” Nolan said. But, as to why ‘Dark Knight’ Nolan would only say, “I’ll leave that for people to infer.”
The theme for ‘Dark Knight’ is “about things having to get worse before they get better.” The guarded director also stated that “The Killing Joke,” a classic graphic novel by Alan Moore, was a major influence on how he decided to portray The Joker in this coming sequel. Heath Ledger has signed on to play The Joker. “I also would point very much to the first two appearances of the Joker in the comic. If you look at where the Joker comes from there’s a very clear direction that fits what we’re doing very well,” Nolan said.
The full Horowitz interview will be featured in the October 23rd issue of Mean Magazine.

I think you mean the sequel to “Batman Begins”, not “Batman Returns”.

After V for Vendetta and Watchmen, The Killing Joke
I must of missed it when they named 2006 Official Lets-Put-Alan-Moore’s-Work -To-Film Year.
