Back in May, on Slice of SciFi Show #057 we talked about the possiblity of a new Stargate Movie. Now the original movie’s co-writer and producer Dean Devlin (The Triangle & Independance Day) told SciFi Wire that he has struck a production deal with MGM and will be developing a two picture sequel to the original film with the hopes of getting both Kurt Russell and James Spader to go back through the Stargate to reprise their roles as Jack O’Neil and Daniel Jackson. Devlin says that Russell and Spader have expressed interest in revisiting the project.
Dean claims he’d like to pick up the story from where the original 1994 film left off without any reference to the established mythos and canon set down by the highly successful television spinoff. “We would just continue the mythology of the movie and finish that out. I think the series could still live at the end of the third sequel. So we’re going to try to not tread on their stories,” added Devlin. Russell and Spader have “always said they wanted to do it. The irony is actually because it was 12 years ago that we made Stargate,…. part two was actually supposed to take place about 12 years later. We were just going to kind of age them up as actors. So it actually works out really nicely.”
“When we created the original Stargate, we always envisioned it as a trilogy, and, unfortunately, the way in which the movie got made, we didn’t really have control over [the future of it],” Devlin said. “We didn’t have the ability to do two and three. MGM had then made a big commitment to doing the [TV] series, and they were worried that the movie could interfere with the series. Well, now that the series has run so successfully for so long (10 years) and spawned a second series, and there’s a whole new regime at MGM, they’re not really worried about, the series is running great on its own. And they think there is an audience out there who would like to see what parts two and parts three were intended to be. Because there was a larger story arc that we had in mind, and we never got to explore it so I think it will be very exciting to actually get to go do parts two and three.”
I know we have a lot of Stargate fans out there. Make comments related to this news and tell us what you think of the idea of a full Stargate trilogy movie that will not star Richard Dean Anderson or Michael Shanks in the two leading roles that they have virtually made a household name.
Jason C. says
I think I remember reading somewhere that Dean Devlin really dosent like the TV franchise. Now with that information the above statement “I think the series could still live at the end of the third sequel. So we’re going to try to not tread on their stories” sounds like a PC version of “Screw the series were doing what we want.”
I am very meh on the idea of these new films. I like the first film, but with 9+ seasons worth of material on the series, Im wondering if they are going to be able to bring anything new to the movies.
Ed from Texas says
Isn’t season 1 of SG-1 supposed to be about a year after the movie? How can a movie set 12 years after the first one not tread on the canon of the TV show, particularly since it will take place at least a year beyond where the TV show is in time?
While I think this might have worked if they did it before SG-1 and Atlantis came to be, I think they’re going to have a really hard time making it work now. As they said, SG-1 is well established and that is what I think of as Stargate now. A new movie that ignores all of this is a recipe for a bomb, methinks.
He’d be better off doing it the Star Trek way – have some books written to tell those stories. We could accept them as non-canon vs. SG-1 much more easily.
Bronzethumb says
No.
The time for a Stargate film franchise based on the films has come and gone. Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis are the franchise now.
If they’re gonna do a Stargate movie then it needs to be a spinoff of one of the series. Hell, the only reason there hasn’t been a movie already is because the series kept getting picked up (SG-1 stories like Full Circle and Lost Citywere originally movie ideas).
I think that one of the MGM bigwigs went on record as saying that they’re planning on doing an SG-1 film soon that would launch a third spinoff series. I hope that they keep SG-1 going for a few more years and then wrap it up with a movie (and not an X-Files sorta movie but a Serenity sorta movie, with galactic pandemonium and characters being killed with gay abandon), as has been on the cards since Season 5.
Note: there’s already a series of novels that were written to follow on from the original ’94 movie using some of Devlin and Emmerich’s ideas.
Paul From Des Moines says
Oh hell no! Absolutley NOT! There is no way in hell that this is going to work. No. um…NO. There’s far too much built up, far too much done…He can’t possibly expect to do this without fraking up the continuity. They need to focus their efforts on the SG-1 movie thats supposed to be out in 08 and possibly kicking off that third series…STOP GOING BACK TO MAKE PREQUELS!!!
Jason C. says
Paul you obviously didnt read the story. This wouldnt be prequels. This would be Devlin making his own continuation of the Stargate movie, dont even put SG-1 in the formula.
Claire says
There is absolutely no way I am interested in a movie outside established canon. As Bronzethumb mentioned there are books out there based on the movie and in a different direction than the show. I haven’t read them. Maybe they are good, but I think a show running an unprecedented tenth season is the place to draw material for a movie. I loved the Stargate movie, but Anderson, Tapping, Judge and Shanks are Stargate for me, now. Thanks, but No thanks.
Pete Smith says
I think critics generally agree that Michael Shanks is a better Daniel Jackson; I personally have enjoyed the series far more than I did the movie. I vote we wait for the SG-1 movie.
Patricia says
Let’s be honest – Stargate SG1 is not Stargate without Michael Shanks and Richard Dean Anderson. While I enjoy the current work of James Spader, and he has always been one of my favourite actors, there is only one Daniel Jackson – and he is Michael Shanks. I’m not interested in a facsimile.
Walter says
Well not that my 2-cents worth will amount to anything… but here goes.
First I’d like to give credit where credit is due. The original Stargate movie was very good. Russell, while not one of my favorite actors, was credible as the brooding military man, struggling with his inner turmoil. And let’s not knock ‘ole Jimmy Spader too much, he’s an excellent actor and to give an objective evaluation, I think he would have succeeded had he ended up playing the TV Daniel Jackson. Despite Michael Shanks being one of my favorite actors, I think either Spader or Shanks would be equally compelling as Dr D.J.. Also I’d like to point out it was that movie that “started it all”, shall we say, for all of us Stargate junkies!!
Now, having said that, I don’t like the idea of 2 Stargate movies that completely ignore the last 9 Seasons of SG-1 and 2 seasons of Atlantis!! We have grown to love the characters, we have pretty much defeated the Goa’uld, we’ve stopped the Replicators and we’ve made some great friends along the way!! What we need now is a movie that allows the casts of SG-1 and Atlantis to come together!! Do it as a side-story that doesn’t interfere with the overall plots of either series, if you want. Naturally we’d have to bring back Richard Dean’s O’Neill because let’s be honest, Stargate just isn’t the same without him!! No offense to Mitchell. He’s good. O’Neill is better. But the movie can have both!! Oh… and by the way, I think it’s about time for Dr. Weir to be recalled to Earth, don’t you? Just food for thought.
I think Stargate movies are a great idea… but come on MGM, stick to the characters we already know and love!! I mean, who wouldn’t want to see O’Neill, Mitchell, Shephard, Carter, Jackson, T’ealc, McKay, Ronan, Tayla and company all together, united with one mission, one cause?!?! Sounds like a winner to me!!
Clarence says
Hell’s Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am all for a trilogy!!!! Yes, I am a huge fan of SG-1 but I want to see them finish the movie line. It always was Russell and Spader for me but I have grown to love Anderson and Shanks too. SG-1 will stand on it’s own. After all, no one ever thought the first movie would be a huge hit and look what it has grown into over the last 12 years. Go for it Devlin, go for it all the way… finish those movies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cryme says
Hell hell hell no. You’ve missed your chance Devlin! Give it up! Just because you’re bitter that you lost creative control of Stargate doesn’t mean you can spite everyone and make up your own story. The movie was okay, but honestly I didn’t even get into Stargate until SG-1. Now we have 10 years of an established universe that we’re just supposed to ignore?? Just think about it…
1. Jack O’Neil (one L again) is going to be an up-tight military jerk. Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O’Neill pretty much set the atmosphere of Stargate that everyone loves with his light attitude and comic relief.
2. No Gua’ould… no Jaffa… no Replicators… no Ancients… no Ori… not necessarily even any other aliens… If there are, they’d just be made up from nowhere… Keep in mind “Ra” wasn’t even established as a snake-like alien attached to people’s spine.
And let’s face it – people are going to be CONFUSED AS BLOODY HELL. Yes we all understand cuz we read this article… but to the general public all they see is “Coming Soon: Stargate 2”. They’ve probably seen a few episodes of the series here and there and now they expect it to correlate somehow… WHOOPS it doesn’t though… Is the movie going to have a disclaimer before it starts? like: “NOTE: This movie although called ‘Stargate’ has nothing to do with anything you now think of as ‘Stargate’, so just try to forget the last 10 years of your life NOW, and sit back and watch the movie”
Duh.
Nola says
Stargate without Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks would be like Star Trek without William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. Yeah, they may make some money on it because it is called “Stargate”. They would make a lot more money if they used the characters the fans have grown to know and love for the past 10 years.
Alex says
To present an opposing viewpoint, if I may:
Yes, I love SG-1. I even prefer Anderson’s O’Neill to Russell’s O’Neil. I’ve had a soft spot for James Spader ever since I saw the movie, but Michael Shanks has grown on me, too.
That being said, what’s wrong with a Stargate movie picking up from where the first left off? Personally, I was never happy with Daniel’s arbitrarily-renamed wife being kidnapped and infested, but like I said, I love the show anyway. I’d just like to see what Devlin makes of what was, originally, his brainchild. Who says there isn’t room for two Stargate canons? Not me. I’d welcome a direct continuation of the movie.
Hey – if it sucks, I’ll still watch it. And I’m willing to bet that thousands if not more other Stargate fans will do the same. 😉
Jadwiga says
I say go Mr Devlin! I always wanted to see a sequel(s) done by the original duo containing the original actors. While I am a fan of the series (at least Seasons 1-3 and 6) I perfer the movie and James Spader as Daniel to the way MS and the writers are playing Daniel in the later Seasons.
So, I’m hoping that that they come back!
Another canon would be fantastic.
Nemsen says
Here’s the perfect solution Mr. Devlin MUST consider: Set the timeline of the second and third movie within that 1 year gap between the first movie and the series, rather than having it 12 years later. This allows the series and the movies to exist in harmony.
Jonas says
This is a awful a new universe. don’t do it. do a sg-1 movei and start a new spinoff.
Marvin says
Here’s some food for thought.
Dean Devlin can take these movies in a new direction that will set the tone for more interesting stories on Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and a possible third show. This would be possible because he said his story was set 12 years from the original. However Devlin should not ignore the storyline created by the shows. He should use them as a basis to write a story on a new frontier.
I believe these movies should include all the characters from both tv shows in a plot that places earth in realer jeopardy than ever depicted in the shows, however James Spader and Kurt Russell should pick up their original roles because they pioneered the characters O’Neil and Jackson(besides Anderson and Shanks are tv actors).
Although such movies should include the tv cast, in order to move in the direction of being able to create another spin-off tv show the story should focus on another SG team consisting of four new characters that would be the center focus of the story (at least 51% of the focus).
The inspiration of the entire Stargate franchise (movie and shows) comes from mythology and legend from around the world. This means that even if Devlin’s take on two sequels would be different from Wright and Cooper’s shows the plot will still fit well with the stories that have already been made. A story that ties all myth and legend into a climatic battle for the continued existence of the human race is a story that would be best carried out by SG-1(O’Neil, Carter, Jackson, Teal’c, Mitchell, and Vala)The SG-ATL expidition team, and the new team that would carry on to another Stargate tv series (big chance to add big hollywood faces to the frachise).
Lastly a story including all cast from the shows should include the great alien races of the story (The Nox, The Gua’ould, The Ori, The Ancients, The Wraith) to add to the complexity of the story.
This is just how I think that the shows and Devlin’s incarnation can live in utter perfect harmony.
Marvin says
I am also a supporter of Wright and Cooper doing an SG-1 and Atlantis centered movies that would come before Devlin’s versions. The more Stargate movies the better.
Gerda Schuilenburg says
If Dean Devlin wants to make another Stargate movie than he must do what he think is right, but I myself think he wants to ride on the succes of the 10 years running successful tv serie Stargate Sg-1.
I dont think thats right!
I saw the original Stargate movie with Kurt Russel and James Spader. A good movie and I said that this could be a bg hit for something more, and i was right a tv serie with Richard Dean Anderson as Jack’O Neill the ‘O neill with 2 Ll’s and yes more humor. I love the serie and I am watching from day one till now. Its the best tv serie ever, and if there will be another Stargate movie than fine but lets bring Richard Dean Anderson back because he is the best jack ‘O neill. No offence to Kurt Russel or Ben Browder, but Kurt Russel may be a good actor he was a very boring Jack ‘O neill. ben Browder does his best he does, but lets face it Richard Dean Anderson is the best! Yes Richard Dean Andertson is the perfect Jack ‘O neill and he must be in the movie. I think Jack , daniel Dr weir Shepherd, Carter, tealc, Ronan and mcKay,Tayla and bunch of replicators and a few ugly goulds an put some warith aliens aslo in them and lets not forget good old Thor he is the most beautyful and adorable alien so yes include him as well, and The nos guys were good to so they can make themselfs invisible. It would be a good combination. Yes that would be just perfect.
I agree with Walter Sounds like a winner to me!
And a good mission too.
Marvin says
After ten years of getting use to certain faces, sure people are going to want to stick with what they’re use to. But on the behalf of Mr. Russell ( Who obviously has no defense with Stargate fans anywhere. ), His portrayal of Jack is set in a point where his life is falling apart drastically ( It’d be pretty damn hard to be remotely satirical if someone close to you died and it caused your relationship with others close to you to dissolve right before you.). The portrayal by Richard Dean Anderson is of a Jack who has learned to move on with his life and cope with his loss in a less suicidal manner.
Russell’s portrayal of O’Neil is also that of an low tolerant task oriented military commander ( This being projected through his current emotional state ). Anderson plays a more tolerant yet still very task oriented military commander with people skills ( taking in account that he doesn’t run over or look through non-military personnel like characters such as Col. Mark Everett (Stargate: Atlantis Season One Finale and Season Two Premiere) and Col. Marshall Sumner (Stargate: Atlantis: Rising).
For anyone who has ever seen another movie with Kurt Russell (such as “Tango and Cash,””Escape from New York,” and “Escape from L.A.”) will see that he has a lighter side not to mention comical. Sure Richard Dean Anderson plays a good Jack O’Neill (As a matter of fact I think he plays a better one than Russell), but we’re talking about the movie and having Anderson play O’Neill in the movie would be like having Harrison Ford play MacGuyver in a movie version of the television show. Would that seem right to you? Anderson had a ten year run at O’Neill. It’s about time you gave the oringinals another chance (it’s not like Shanks and Anderson couldn’t be found important roles as different characters in a motion picture).
Now…
Who’s in favor of another Godzilla or Independence Day?
Come on any takers.
RHodeidra says
I vote Richard Dean and company.
Take Serenity and firefly.
Good series, cancelled (corporation are stupid) and converted into a great movie. YES the original cast is still alive (although Kurst is about 65 now…)but after 10 years and all that succes we all know they pwn the frikken characters. It’s time to make the leap, and get our cast inbto the big screen.
2 cent on floor….. all go watch it anyways, i just hope that it will involve a huge fight between the Ori, Wraith, the rest of the GGoa’ould fleet and Earth, with a surprise entrance from the old Tollan, while 3-5 SG team hecticly do what we love them for: stressing out to save all out asses again…
Indeed
RHodeidra says
Ow and what I suggest, MGM (listen to tha king of Reason….)
A Huuuuuuuuuuuuuge poll, HUUUGE on a official site where every fan gets to vote 1 time on the cast.
NO we do not expect you to say “ok we’ll do whatever you want us to, fans” since we all know you do not give a rat’s ass about our needs.
Do this for the money and nothing else: if you do it this way you are sure to NOT offend alotta peeps and get another feet of money on your money-pile…

well, i love stargate and count myself amoung some of the biggest fans. firstly i have to say i will shed more than a few tears when sg1 finally comes to a finish. lets face it, it is probably the best sci-fi series ever (as is proven by 10 years of it!)
saying that i, certainly enjoyed the original film and wouldn’t object, as such, to a sequel following straight on from that.
i think that the idea of basing it 12 years on from the original could work. a better idea however, would be to base it maybe 30-50 years on, giving the writers the freedom to experiment, imagine how far on human kind could progress with the stargate network at their control without replicators etc. they could delve into the stargate programme in more detail and we could even see new worlds populated by a now enlightened and united mankind.
plus think of the new “baddies” they could dream up!
just a thought.
Gonca says
I want a stargate-sg1 movie for so many years, to watch them in a theatre instead of a TV ! big screen, great audio… must be heaven. Regarding the cats. Well. The SGA1 team (anderson, shanks, tapping etc) is great. Anybody but them is to me a waste of time and resource, plus a huge increas in risk. And for sure the TVshow fans will be lost. Why do we not discuss something more important. What I wonder is if Devlin can tell Stargate better? Can he make a difference with the same people? SG1 as a show has so much quality in almost all of it episodes. Not like other scfi shows. Always with new stories that mostly do really surprise. Never the same fight going on and on. And it is always told with so much attention for details like music. Once you are used to that quality you get annoyed with other shows. for example in battlestar galactica. there are certain things not possible to be done in space ! it is clear that nobody did any research. so what I want to say is. as a SG1 fan I hope for a top quality movie that can even impress a audience like us. focus on this. rather to discuss a obvious thing like who should be the actors.
runner_x says
im a fan of both the movie and the series but now sg1 and atlantis are the future and trying to continue now the original movie regardless of the 10 years of stargate this will not look good for most of the fans. sure i would have like the idea if the series werent good now its to late to continue the original movie without killing sg1. much better would be now to focus on putting the sg1 or atlantis on the big screen.Sorry but this is my opinion because i like everything in order and i dont want to see productions with the big title STARGATE but have no conection with the universe that we already know: the one that started with the original movie and continues with sg1 and now atlantis.
Archie says
I watched the original movie many years ago. While it was quite interesting and deserving credit for starting the whole thing, the real Stargate for me is and will be SG-1 with the Atlantis spin-off.
If there will be some new Stargate movies, let’s use the established SG-1/Atlantis universe and mythology. Ignoring the continuity will surely confuse most of the fans.
Basically whatever stories could be done as “alternate reality” thing in SG-1 universe, but ignoring the TV show completely could not be right. Hopefully MGM can see that. I will wait for the SG-1 or Atlantis or the pilot for a new spin-off on big screen.
Ellie says
There is no way a movie could work unless it was as a spin off from one of the TV shows – SG1 or Atlantis. I wouldn’t bother going to see it – it wouldn’t work after having ten years of episodes to “not tread on”, I’d wait for the new series and stick with SG1 and Atlantis or I’d see a movie based on one of them.
Phil says
I wonder how many of those who are dismayed over the possibility of a Kurt Russell/James Spader SG-1 movie enjoyed those SG-1 episodes involving parallel universes/realities? I think a potentially compelling concept could be one in which the Russell/Spader team of O’Neill/Jackson turn out to exist in one of those alternate realities accessible though the mirror. In this way, it is even conceivable that the entire cast of the TV series could enter the foray alongside the movie cast through the mirror. To me — who happens to love BOTH the movie and series — this could be both hugely entertaining and reconcile any discrepancies between movie and TV versions. Also, there would be no issues with “stepping on” storylines/timelines.
Sam says
Phil — What an interesting idea. One that is not only feasible but sounds like it would be rockin’ fun to see as well.
Ray says
The movie was a voyage into the fantastic, but the series was a third-rate Star Trek. I’m all for having movies unrelated to the television canon, as I’ve never really liked nor respected the television series. Out of the 70-100 episodes I’ve sat through, long story, I’ve actually enjoyed 3 or 4 at the most. 20-so were tolerable, whereas the rest I vaguely recalled times I’d seen the scenarios performed (and acted) better in other franchises.
COY says
Sounds like a great idea.
But Id rather see them use Richard Dean Anderson and Michael Shanks instead of Russel and Spader.
P.S. Stargate Sg1 rocks.
stargate atlantis sucks much ass
Reda says
I personally didn’t like the series and would really really love a sequel with the original actors…
Morjana says
About every two to three years, Dean Devlin pops up and claims he’s working on a Stargate sequel. Dean mentioned it in Jul. ’06, Jul. 03, Sep. ’00…
The original movie was released 13 years ago. I loved the movie. I love SG1 and SGA.
SG1 has two-made-for dvd movies that will be released in 2008.
I honestly can’t see MGM greenlighting a feature Stargate with the original characters being portrayed by different actors, because I don’t think there’s a snowball’s chance in hades that Kurt Russell and James Spader would sign up for a sequel — that MGM could afford to make.

Ezra says
Yes, yes, and seventeen times more YES!!! I want to see Stargate II and Stargate III grace the screens sometime this lifetime! I want to see the PROPER Stargate story continue, I want to see the REAL O’Neil and Daniel return to the big screen. I want to see Mayan pyramids, Sasquatch, and the Loch Ness monster connected and tied to the Stargate and extraterrestrials!
I used to be a fan of SG-1. I even saw the series before I saw the film, and initially prefered the show to the movie. But Stargate the movie, its cool villains and awe-inspiring alien weapons and technology, grew on me.
For years, I saw SG-1 as the official continuation of the original movie, and tried to ignore the discrepancies and contradictions between the movie and series. I came to believe that the discrepancies could never be explained away properly and Stargate and Stargate SG-1 never reconciled.
I read the novelization of the movie, written by Devlin and Emmerich personally, and liked the backstory of Ra, the ancient Egyptians, and the pyramids, preferring their backstory to the lackluster one created by Wright, Glassner, Cooper, and company.
Many of Devlin and Emmerich’s backstory were utilized and explored in detail within the StarGate novels written by Bill McCay, which were released mainly before the TV series was released, and I found this continuation gripping and exciting, for more enjoyable than the unoriginal fare in any episode of SG-1.
I found Devlin and Emmerich’s original Stargate universe, as well as the one developed by McCay, to be far richer and exciting than Stargate SG-1.
Devlin and Emmerich’s Stargate is like an interstellar
version of the Indiana Jones saga. Stargate SG-1 is just another Star Trek clone, with a Stargate thrown in to distinguish to from its brethren.
To those SG-1 fans who keep complaining and moaning that Devlin’s sequels should never be made and that SG-1 is the official Stargate canon now, just SHUT UP!
You have several episodes, novels, comic books, magazines, video games, amusement park rides, and spin-offs to keep your gluttony for everything SG-1 satisfied. What do fans of the movie have to keep them happy, besides the movie itself?
Let’s see: a novelization, five novels, and a handful of comic books. Wow! Isn’t THAT grand! Compared to what fans of SG-1 get to lap up, we movie fans got nothing! No further novels, short stories, etc. to continue the story of the original Stargate universe and explore it in detail.
And when we movie fans just want a little piece of the Stargate franchise pie, you SG-1 fans go into an uproar, all selfish, with religious zeal to keep anything that doesn’t suit your ideal version of the Stargate universe from seeing the light of day.
GROW UP.
Hundreds of movies based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Bram Stoker’s Dracula novels have be released over the last century, most unrelated and unconnected, with discrepancies seperating them from each other. The Highlander franchise is made up of a couple films and TV series, not all of which are canonical with one another and ultimately exist in universes all their own.
Why can’t this be the case with Stargate? Fans of the series will get the Stargate universe they want, while fans of the film get the version they want. That way, there will be two major continuities, two seperate canons, within the franchise, both co-existing and equal.
But fans of SG-1 don’t want this. They want to maintain a monopoly on the franchise, selfish zealots who don’t want non-SG-1 Stargate fans to be satisfied.
If the films come out, they won’t hurt the SG-1 franchise all that much. They won’t magically make all SG-1 merchandise forgotten and unexistent.
You’re just afraid that Devlin’s sequels will draw in people who don’t like or prefer the SG-1 continuity. Or that some fans of Wright and Cooper’s version will be won over, and largly ignore the SG-1 canon.
If that ever happens, it will be on a small scale. SG-1 may lose some fans, but not most. A tired horse that has long run its course will continue to race on, even if at a infintisimally lesser rate.
If you don’t want to see the films if they come out, then JUST DON’T GO SEE THEM. Don’t prevent those that do from seeing them due to your narrow minds.
I don’t like SG-1 anymore. I think the series and its spin-offs are anti-religious, evolutionist drivel, and I can no longer stand any of the characters or storylines.
I hate SG-1, but I don’t go around screaming that all copies of all the episodes ever made should be burned and all records of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis should be sealed in vaults and buried under kilometers of concrete.
I JUST-DON’T-WATCH-THE-SHOWS. Period.
As long as Devlin steers clear of anti-religious evolutionist drivel, and keeps English from being the universal language in the movies, I say LET THE SEQUELS BE MADE!
keith says

Hmm….after substantial searching for information on this issue, it appears that even as of this year, the “negotiations” have gotten nowhere. It’s seems that Devlin’s optimism was misplaced, for he has made no progress, and MGM is continuing on with Stargate: Universe and the third SG-1 movie alongside the Atlantis one.
Now to be fair, the TV shows are consistently high quality products, and I can understand why people are so attached to them. As for the movie, it is also fun in its own way, though admittedly it’s not in the same arena as the shows. They are both complementary and different.
For me at least, I don’t see what the problem is. While ridiculously optimistic, Devlin did clearly explain that his planned movies would in no way invalidate the TV material. Even if the movies were made, they would only really be just an alternative version of events far smaller and self-contained than the sprawling universe started by SG-1. After they were made, MGM and Devlin could simply state that they are merely an optional canon, and not the official, company endorsed material.
How can a mere two movies completely cancel out and invalidate a TV franchise that has built a rock-hard foundation over the last 12 years that continues to grow? If they are explicitly shown as a what-if, alternate scenario rather than the only valid one, than that should help demarcate the distinction between the two respective visions.
Remember, it would only be a problem if the viewers make it one. If it is shown to be an alternate, what-if canon, then after they are done people could simply ignore them and let them fade into obscurity.
Devlin only wants to finish out the smaller, self-contained mythology he had intended, and once they were done, his work with Stargate would be complete. MGM then could invalidate them anyway, and everyone can rest easy.
Of course, anyone with a brain in their heads knows that that won’t happen. MGM still sticks to their position, Devlin is left empty handed, and everyone hates him. If he really wants to respect the Stargate name, he should of course give up and let MGM continue onwards undisturbed.
Of course, if MGM drives it into the ground and kills it with Stargate: Universe, then that would be incredibly ironic.
I for one have grown bored with the shows, and after discovering the original material, I am even more disappointed with them, but that’s just me. As much as I would love to see Devlin complete his vision, I am no fool.
I am realist; I know that this will never happen, and that sooner rather than later Devlin will have to give up. MGM has too much invested in this franchise, and they are far too afraid to deviate from it in any conceivable way. Devlin is almost certainly despised at MGM, so he will not be able to do anything at all.
Shaun Danby says
Whilst the TV series is undoubtedly popular (and yes I do enjoy it) it has never been more than a Star Trek wannabe, whilst the Movie was one of the better science fiction movies that have been made in the last couple of decades. The only reason that the series became so popular in the early days was simply due to the lack of the sequels to the movie which has allowed the makers of SG1 to build something very special. Even if movie sequels were to step away from the series storylines few would worry about continuity if Russel and Spader were to reprise their roles.

All those dumb 160+ IQ scientists making all that crap up to infuriate the enlightened and chosen… The clever creationist guys really show them up sometimes. Really…
FWIW, I don’t think evolution is drivel anymore. I don’t hate the SG-1verse anymore either, though I do think it’s inferior to the original film and concept.
Michael Falkner says
I’m apathetic about the concept. If Bryan Singer can take a stab at another modern Battlestar Galactica without any regard for the four years that the public now knows as BSG, then Devlin/Emmerich can have their day in the sun with Stargate II and III.
Alternate histories, parallel universes, more avenues of entertainment… whatever. There’s been discussion of this for years, and I refuse to get excited until there is some actual movement on this or any other similar property.
The Doctor says
For the record, I really like the Stargate SG-1, Atlantis and Universe shows and have seen ever single episode at least once. =D I personally also really liked the original movie and would love to see 2 and 3! If these movies were made then I would watch them at least once in theaters.I’m really hoping they come out, but I’m not holding my breath.
