Space Shuttle Atlantis Launches

The space shuttle Atlantis launched on a mission to visit the International Space Station Monday afternoon, reports the Associated Press.

Atlantis' blastoff was the fifth successful launch of 2009, following three other visits to the station and — on Atlantis' previous flight — a final overhaul of the Hubble Space Telescope.

I should be slugging away at my National Novel Writing Month novel, but instead I choose to regale hapless readers who wander by with yet more of my thoughts on recent movies. Recent in terms of when they became available for rent, not necessarily when shown in theaters. That's right; I cater to people who shun the company of crowds (although crowds might have been hard to find at some of these movies), and who prefer instead to enjoy, or not, their movie-viewing at home.

"2012" Opens Strong

It wasn't the end of the world for "2012" at the box office this weekend.

The new destruction thriller from director Roland Emmerich raked in $65 million for its opening weekend. That total was $5 million more than predicted by Hollywood box office experts. It continues a solid winning streak of box-0ffice debuts for the director.

Despite the fact that it didn't top the box office with its sixth installment, the latest version of "Saw" turned a profit for Lionsgate Studios. And we all know what that means--we'll get more "Saw" next Halloween.

The Hollywood Reporter indicates that Lionsgate wants a new installment to hit theaters for late October next year.
