It was a holly, jolly Christmas for the BBC. The British network, powered by two popular specials, dominated ratings in the UK on Christmas Day.
The long-awaited Wallce and Gromit Christmas special, “A Matter of Loaf and Death” was the year’s highest rated program, garnering an audience of 14.3 million. That equals about 53.3% of British television sets tuned into the special.
Then, the ratings continued with the Christmas special for “Doctor Who,” “The Next Doctor.” This year’s holiday outing came in second with 11.7 million viewers or about 50.5% of the British television sets tuned in. The ratings continued a banner year for the Doctor in the UK. This year’s season finale was the highest rated show for the week and held the number one spot in the ratings for the first time since the heyday of Tom Baker.
The solid numbers for both shows easily helped the BBC dominated it’s rival, ITV.
