Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek of Halcyon Co. confirmed they are writing and developing a fifth installment in the “Terminator” franchise, Variety reports. Anderson and Kubicek acquired the rights to the franchise last year and announced they were considering making a new trilogy of films in the “Terminator” universe.
However, most Hollywood insiders expected Anderson and Kubicek to wait until after the next installment, “Terminator: Salvation” opened before giving a green-light to more installments. But positive reaction by the studio, media and fans to the trailers and screened footage encouraged them to move up the production schedule.
“We feel the time is now to start shaping the next part of this,” Kubicek said.
Warner Bros. is handling the domestic release of “Terminator Salvation” with Sony handling the majority of the rest of the world, with the exception of the Middle East where the film is being handled by Dubai-based Gulf Film.
No decision has been made yet on whether the fifth “Terminator” will be once again split by Warner Bros. and Sony.
Actor Christian Bale signed on for the role of John Connor in the next three installments. No details yet on the potential storyline or setting for the fifth “Terminator” movie. But that’s understandable given that “T4” hasn’t opened yet and too many details could be SPOILER territory.
“Terminator 5” is tentatively scheduled to open in 2011.
