In a first for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the organization has unveiled its top 10 contenders in both comedy and drama for this years big Emmy presentation in September.
This is the first time the Academy as ever named their short list of the best choices so early in the season. The choices will be officially named on July 17, however, we can tell you a few of them now.
For best drama series are ABC’s SF thriller “Lost,” “Boston Legal” and “Grey’s Anatomy (both also from ABC), the Fox Network’s mega-hit “House,” NBC’s “Friday Night Lights”, the Showtime/CBS thriller “Dexter,” “Mad Men” from AMC, the Glenn Close legal drama “Damages” on FX, and the final two big dramas from cable are HBO’s “The Wire” and Showtime’s “The Tudors.”
Making the top 10 comedy cut are NBC’s “30 Rock” and “The Office,” CBS’s Charlie Sheen ratings winner “Two and a Half Men,” Fox’s animated series “Family Guy” and ABC SF dramedy “Pushing Daisies.” Rounding out the list are past two winners “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Entourage” along with newbie “Flight of the Conchords,” all on HBO. Last, but certainly far from least is Showtime’s big hit starring Mary-Louise Parker, “Weeds.”
The 60th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place September 21.
I would like to see Lost win but I’m thinking Mad Men might win since it’s the “it” show among critics right now.
Big Dexter fan here. Caveat is that I haven’t seen this season of Lost yet.
A big w00t for Flight of the Conchords too. A couple of Kiwi guys in NYC and they still take the piss out us poor Aussies.
Interesting side note about Dexter (well I find it interesting). Dexter has been on cable in Australia and when anything is very successful on cable it crosses over to free-to-air network TV. One of the big networks in Oz, TEN, has picked up Dexter. Because the TEN network has a deal with CBS in the states CBS sent TEN the anaemic cut for US network TV version of Dexter. TEN has had to delay the launch of Dexter until they can get the un-cut version. We can have all nudity and effin swearing we want after 8.30 on Network TV in Oz (80 “F” words and a couple of “C” words thrown in for good measure on a recent 1 hour episode of Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares on network tele. Thankfully no nudity in that show. I like Gordon and all but he can keep his pants on).
