Summer and Noah talk about The Spine of Night, how it’s the first animated feature geared towards adults we’ve seen in a very long time, and the dark fantasy storytelling combined with the rotoscope style of animation was a major appeal for the film.

While both appreciate the risks taken with the story choices and stylistic choices, occasionally the over-the-top nature of the violence in spots seemed to distract from better execution of the story elements. There also seemed to be gaps in the narrative where a viewer might have to suspend too much disbelief to follow along, but those are minor nitpicks compared to the rest of the overall film.

Both of us rate the movie 3.5 out of 5 stars.

The Spine of Night will premiere exclusively on Shudder on March 24.
