Deathscribe 2016, the 9th Annual International Festival of Radio Horror Plays is in the works, and with submissions still open until July 31, it’s not too late to submit your best, scariest short stage script!

This week, two members of the WildClaw Theatre Group stop by to talk about what goes into creating the Deathscribe performances. Ele Matelan (lead foley designer) and Joe Griffin (band co-director) are directly involved with sculpting the sounds and effects and the music that will be accompanying each of the 10-minute performances in the finals of the competition.

Ele talks about the “stuff” that goes into creating the effects that are needed to sound like a monster chewing, or something screaming, or a skull being caved in, and Joe talks about different ways to design both the sounds and the music that various instruments can will accompany the performances. He has his own theremin, which has to score top marks for his geek card.

And writers, if you’re newly inspired to write a short horror performance piece to submit, you have until July 31 to send in your script, following the guidelines:

WildClaw is looking for 10-minute radio scripts that are genuinely scary, imaginative, chilling, intelligent, suspenseful, horrific, or downright grotesque. There are no restrictions as to content or tone, but keep in mind that WildClaw is a Horror Theatre. They take horror seriously, and so should you. WildClaw wants stories about serial killers, insects, distorted squirrels, cannibals, deep ones, plagues, demonic possessions, dogfish howlers, werewolves, vampires, zombies, aliens, and of course, the monster within.
