Another high-budget Hollywood movie made a less than stellar debut this weekend. R.I.P.D. which cost upwards of $150 million to make was dead on arrival at the box-office, barely able to generate a tenth of its budget in its first few days of release. The film made $12.8 million which didn’t even put the movie in the top five for the weekend.
What did manage to scare up good business was the opening of The Conjuring. On a budget of just $20 million, the film took in $41.5 million and topped the box office.
In second place was Despicable Me 2 with $25.1 million. In just seventeen days in release, the sequel has surpassed the original’s box-office haul. Currently the animated comedy has taken in $276 million in the United States and just over half a billion dollars worldwide.
Third place went to Turbo with $21.5 million. It was the worst debut weekend for a DreamWorks Animation movie since Flushed Away.
Rounding out the top five were Grown-Ups 2 with $20 million and Red 2 with a debut of $18 million.
Final figures will be out Monday.

RIPD had a lot of problems even during production so this isn’t surprising. As for the emphasis on the opening weekend, I’m with James Gunn (Super) and Joe Write (Hanna) when they say that the marketing for a ridiculously strong opening weekend is wrecking both the overall quality of movies and their longevity in theaters.
