“Dark Knight Rises” Plummets, Still Wins Box Office

July 30, 2012 By Mike Hickerson Leave a Comment

With ticket sales dropping 60% from its opening weekend, it’s unlikely the Dark Knight Rises will reach the same box-office stratosphere the Dark Knight did.  But $64.1 million in ticket sales for its second weekend still helped the latest Batman film take the top spot at the box-office.

The movie had a slow showing Friday but rebounded on Saturday and Sunday.

In second place was  Ice Age: Continental Drift with $13.3 million.

The comedy The Watch was a disappointing third with $13 million, about $7 million below expectations.

The dance movie Step Up: Revolution, the only other major newcomer of the group, took fourth place with $11.8 million, the lower end of expectations.

The comedy Ted rounded out the top 5 with $7.4 million, lifting its overall gross to $193.6 million, the surprise comedy hit of the year so far. Final figures are due Monday.
