Will We See An “Avengers” Director’s Cut?

Will We See An “Avengers” Director’s Cut?

June 13, 2012 By Michael Hickerson 10 Comments

The Avengers is the biggest hit of the year, but Marvel isn’t satisfied with the film being the number three earning film of all-time at the box-office.  And they plan to go after the top spot.

According to SuperHeroAuthority.com, Marvel and Disney are considering releasing a director’s cut of the film in theaters later this summer. Director Joss Whedon has said there is a close to 30 minutes of footage he excised for the theatrical version that could show up in a DVD/Blu-Ray release. But it appears now that Marvel could put that version in theaters before summer’s end to help push the film over the top.

Of course, this is a rumor currently and we don’t know that Marvel plans to do this.

If there were a longer cut released to theaters, would you see it? Or do you think that the studio should wait for DVD and give us the longer cut there?

I would absolutely go see it again in the theatre if they did a director’s cut. But I’ll be happy with the longer cut on dvd.

I think it would be interesting to see the deleted scenes on dvd, but it seems like it would be a blatant money grab on the studio’s part to release an Avengers 1.1 in the theaters hot on the heels of the original release. Unless there is something in particular that the director/writer–in this case, Joss–really, really wanted to leave in and felt was integral to the story and was forced to leave out, then I feel that at some point you have to let it go and leave a movie alone as a finished product, a completed artistic work.

I’ll see it, no question. 🙂

Just on general principle this pisses me off.

They should have left the damn extra footage in if they think its worth us paying another $10 to see. Now that its a huge hit, they want to grab what may in fact be 30 minutes of crap that deserved to be on the cutting floor and release it to rake in even more money.

I’m not against them trying to make money, but they should have given us their best product upfront – if that means those extra 30 minutes are worth another $10, then it should have been in there the first place.

if not they should give it as a bonus on the DVD/BluRay discs and stop this nonsense. I still hold a grudge for having to buy the Lords of the Ring DVD sets twice to get the extra footage (though admittedly, the Extended Editions of those are well worth the money).

I agree to an extend. Releasing a director’s cut after people paid for the initial product feels more like a scam and Hollywood is just hurting itself more by it. For example, I avoided getting Watchmen blu-ray because I kept waiting for the most complete version. I’m still not sure which one it is so I didn’t get any. That’s an extra $20 in my pocket and not in theirs and I’m OK with that. Now I have to worry about the Avengers being the same way. I don’t want to spend money on a movie I loved only to find out a month later that there’s another version of it with more footage about to be released. People should be able to exchange whatever version of a movie they got when it first came out for credit on the Extended-Director-Unrated-Whatever version they release later.

Wow, does someone ever need a nap. Or prozac. I can think of way more important things to be pissed about.

If the movie was three hours long and flopped they would’ve looked worse. Heck yeah I’d see it again.

I’m in favor of getting the footage added. I felt that there were a couple of places that needed a bit more fleshing out. For instance, I don’t recall anyone ever mentioning how exactly Thor got back to Earth from Asgard.

Loki said Odin gathered a bunch of Dark Energy to send Thor back. But yes, more details would be nice. Better yet, seeing Thor in Asgard where the Rainbow Bridge is being fixed as he prepares for the journey.

it would depend entirely on what the added 30 minutes were. If it were things that had to be sacrificed solely for the sake of making it 2 1/2 hours but added something to the story as a whole, then I’d consider it. I’ll definitely be getting it on DVD when it comes out though so I can handle seeing it in my home vs a theater.

I’d be in the theater ASAP. I’ve been twice already (2d) and considering going back to see it in 3d just for fun.
More of Hulk slinging Loki like a ragdoll would be fun.
I’d also like so more about Thor and Hawkeye
