Latest “TNG” Blu-Ray Rumors

July 27, 2011 By Michael Hickerson 2 Comments

Before Netflix began streaming Star Trek, we heard rumors that CBS/Paramount was working on remastering The Next Generation.

Whether it was for Blu-Ray release or part of the HD streaming on Netflix was unclear at the time.  Now that the Netflix streaming is the standard def versions of TNG, you may be wondering if the project is still moving forward.

According to Digital Bits, CBS/Paramount is still working on TNG for a Blu-Ray release.   The report indicates that CBS/Paramount is working on a four-episode test disc for the popular series that could hit shelves by the end of this year and then we’d get full releases starting next year.

One challenge facing the series is that it was edited irectly on low-resolution video. Presenting the series in high-definition would probably require redoing the editing from scratch, and then adding new special effects.

    Looking forward to these.

I hope they have kept all the f/x film inserts; it seems easier to re-edit by taking all the film sequences rather than making CGI. Especially as how good TNG looked in the first place; the model work hasn’t aged at all and still looks sumptuous.

Though adding f/x in the later years, as by season 7 even solely incandescent bulbs flashing were used to show a scene in “Gambit”. A TV show that had a standard for FX, once dropping the standard, is a bad omen…

Maybe they’ll do one better and hire Ron Jones to score music to replace the “farting frog symphony” used in seasons 5-7…
