Kinect Star Wars Games Allows Users to Podrace

July 25, 2011 By Mike Hickerson Leave a Comment

If you’ve ever wanted to know what it’s like to be inside a podracer, the upcoming Star Wars Kinect game will help you do just that.

A podracing campaign will be part of the new game, set to hit stores later this year.

Players will start on Tatooine in the Mos Eisley races and eventually make their way to a showdown with young Anakin’s rival Sebulba in the Boonta Eve Classic. The game explores “where does pod-racing go after you have seen it in (The Phantom Menace),” LucasArts’ Craig Derrick tells USA Today. “That is kind of the small story we are going to tell.”

You can choose from one of nine different pod racers and 20 or so pods. There will be unlockable characters, too. About playing the game, Derrick said, “As soon as people stand in front of the camera, they are racing and they get it.”

Also included is a game in which players can wield a lightsaber and use the Force.

Players choose from one of eight Padawan characters who train to become Jedi Knights. The story takes you to several planets including Chewbacca’s home of Kashyyyk and you will meet “marquee” characters such as Obi-Wan, Anakin and Kit Fisto. “We didn’t want to re-create scenes from the films,” Derrick said. “We thought it would be more interesting to tell new stories and weave them through the events of all six films.”

Fans will also be able to purchase a special skinned X-Box console.  The skin will look like R2-D2 while the controllers will be skinned after C3PO.  Fans at this weekend’s San Diego ComicCon got a taste of what the game and console will look like when they hit stores later this year.
