“Thrones” Casts Two Pivotal Roles

“Thrones” Casts Two Pivotal Roles

July 19, 2011 By Michael Hickerson 3 Comments

A Game of Thrones has added two more actors in pivotal roles for the upcoming second season.

EW reports that Stephen Dillane and Carice van Houten have landed the roles of Stannis Baratheon and Melisandre.

Stephen Dillane

Stannis Baratheon is brother to the late King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy). More specifically, he’s the eldest living Baratheon brother, which means he thinks he has a very strong claim on the Iron Throne. In the George R.R. Martin novels, Stannis is morally rigid and assertive leader with a strong sense of strategy, but no ability to win the hearts of his men. Stannis is also in the middle of a spiritual conversion, with Melisandre as the very powerful woman with more than a little influence over the aspiring king and his shifting faith.

Carice Van Houten

Production on the second season of the show begins next week. The producers will participate in a panel later this week at ComicCon.

This guy has a Stannis shaped head I think. I’m really hoping they cast Dominic West somewhere in the show but I think he has something going on @ BBC.

There was another casting announcement that happened soon after this one: Liam Cunningham (“Camelot”, “Outcasts”) will be playing Davos Seaworth.

Brilliant! I love his work. Is he cutting off his fingers for the role?
