Actor Johnny Depp could be getting ready to take over the role Darren McGavin made famous.
According to Deadline, Depp could sign on to play Carl Kolchak in a big-screen version of The Night Stalker. Cited as one of the inspirations for The X-Files, Stalker followed Kolchack as he battled supernatural offenders.
Depp’s production company Infinitum Nihil is reportedly set to produce the big-screen version of the 70s series.
Batman Forever writers Lee and Janet Batchler will be penning the script.

Noooooo!
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
This could be so much worse. Depp does larger-than-life characters well and Kolchak is a LOT larger than life.
I do wish Nicholas Cage could have gotten a shot at the role, though. He adds a dose of grit that Depp replaces with a personal brand of quirkiness.
I wonder who they’ll try to fill Simon Oakland’s shoes with. Playing Tony without irony or cartoonish bluster won’t be easy.
