Moffat: Daleks Getting a Rest

If you’ve been waiting for news of an episode featuring the Daleks for the new season of Doctor Who, our next story may come as a disappointment.

Series runner Steven Moffat says the Doctor’s oldest adversaries are getting a rest.

“Actually, they aren’t going to make an appearance for a while,” he tells the Radio Times. “ Yes, we thought it was about time to give them a rest. There’s a problem with the Daleks.  They are the most famous of the Doctor’s adversaries and the most frequent, which means they are the most reliably defeatable enemies in the universe. They have been defeated by the Doctor about 400 times. Surely they should just see the Tardis approaching, say, ‘Oh. It’s him again’, and trudge away.”

Some fans apparently got into a tizzy about the news, leading Moffat to follow-up via Twitter saying the Daleks wouldn’t feature in the current series but could come back in the near future.

    I applaud Moffatt’s decision regarding the Daleks in that they are no longer terrifying. They’ve been defeated so many times that even many of the actors who have played the Doctor hold the Daleks with contempt.

    When they come back they need to be SCARY!!! If anyone has any doubt just pull out a copy of the classic Dalek series they were introduced in back during William Hartnell’s era. While it was filmed with that “60s” sensibility and pacing, I did find the Daleks to be rather terrifying!!!
