A new video-game version of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is in the works.
The game is being developed by Hothead Games and Megadodo Publications according to a press release.
A press release doesn’t tell us which game platforms will be supported but that it “will be available not only on your planet but also on all nearby systems including Alpha Centauri”.
No word yet on when the game may be released or what to expect. However, the game does have some big shoes to fill. Many of us recall the original Hitchhiker’s game from InfoCom, co-written by Douglas Adams. The game was a huge hit for the text-based game company and is one of the more influential games from the early days of PC gaming.
I spent many an hour playing the text based game, much of it trying to figure out how to get a babel fish into my ear. Without it, you couldn’t win the game and it was among the most elusive of all the puzzles created by InfoCom and Adams.
That said, the game is a sheer joy and there are emulators that allow you download and play the game on your modern computer systems.

This reminds me I still have a copy of Starship Titanic sitting around somewhere that I haven’t played yet…
