While it’s not necessarily a genre show, Fox’s comedy Breaking In has a lot that could appeal to genre fans. Two weeks ago, the story revolved around a plot to steal a copy of the Goonies sequel at ComicCon and the show generally has more than it’s share of geek references and jokes.
And while the show has had solid ratings airing after American Idol, it still got the axe last week from Fox.
But it appears that a campaign by fans and the show’s creators are giving it an inkling of hope for a second season.
Creator Adam F. Goldberg says the network is giving the show a final chance to prove its case. And that chance comes tonight. Fox has moved the season finale from tomorrow night, post-Idol to tonight to see if the series has legs to get a second season.
It’s kind of last-minute, but hopefully the fans will find it,” Goldberg says of the move, which he calls the show’s “most ambitious” yet. “I think cast-wise and creative-wise, Fox recognizes that there is still something there and that’s why they’re revisiting it again. Hopefully we’ll be able to work it out.”
The series does have an ace in the hole. According to TV Guide, Fox president Kevin Reilly likes the series and called the news of its demise “heartbreaking.” And it’s Reilly who has opened the window for the show to prove itself tonight.
“He called to say that they were canceling it, but even he said, ‘Look, I’m going to sleep on it. It’s not a definite pass,'” Goldberg says.
Unfortunately, Breaking In’s future may hinge more on whether Fox can find a suitable show to pair it with rather than on ratings or internal network support. “They just really don’t know what to do with it,” Goldberg says. “When you have a family show or a relationship show, they really know how to promote that and make that a hit. But if you have a show about a bunch of geniuses who do heists every day, that’s hard for any network to figure out.”

this is a really funny show!!! The only one that’s really made me laugh out loud these days.
Everyone should give it a shot. I agree, there’s a lot there for genre fans to love, specially the character “Cash” – he was recruited to the team when he was caught stalking Shatner dressed as Spock. Shatner in return, gives the head of the team Enterprise’s captain’s chair. In another episode, he was affraid he had just created SkyNet when he tried to fix the printer.

I like the show OK. I think it is trying too hard with all the genre fanservice and internet MEMEs. It is better than some of the other live sitcoms Fox has so I will try and support it.

It’s almost a shame this wasn’t an NBC comedy because I think it would be a perfect fit with Community. Either way, I love the show and truly laugh out loud at every episode.

Awesome show, just like fox to move a show unannounced and then see if they have viewers. scheech… will they never learn? I think they need to get the monkeys new darts for the show pickers.

My son and I love this show, it’s rare we can find a genre that we both can enjoy. Seems as if the networks don’t care what the fans like. For once a comedy that plays out of the usual box! I have had my fill of doctor, lawyer, cops, and love stories. Finally something that is fun!! Fox would be foolish to cancel it.
