Yet Another Wonder Woman Costume Change

April 13, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

Fans weren’t happy when the costume for the new Wonder Woman was revealed.

And while NBC made some tweaks to it before filming on the pilot began, it looks like we’ll get another tweak or two.

Apparently, Wonder Woman will only wear long, form fitting pants some of the time.  In other circumstances, she’ll wear shorts similar to the costume worn by Lynda Carter in the first television version.

And that has been the plan since the beginning says NBC exec, Robert Greenblatt.

There was an initial outcry about the long pants – you know, skintight pants as opposed to those little shorts [worn by Lynda Carter in the original TV series]. But the shorts were always planned. They are actually used in the final confrontation when she beats Veronica Cale (played by Elizabeth Hurley),” he tells TV Line.

If you’re curious about this new version of the costume, join the club.  So far, there are no photos of it.  Though this being the Internet, we expect them any second now.

Maybe she will only wear the pants when it’s cold outside?

I don’t believe this was the plan at all. What happened is, they modeled the costume after the comic’s redesign, then were shocked to see the reaction. So they made some cosmetic changes, and “leaked” those photos. But people still weren’t happy, so they caved in. But they don’t have the shorts ready yet, and they can’t thrown away all the footage they already shot with the pants, so they made this announcement and are scrambling to get the shorts done in time to shoot the final scene. That’s how Hollywood works.

I just don’t care anymore. An outfit is not going to make this show better.

I’m pretty appalled by this announcement. I was happy with the darker, non-shiny pants. They’re infinitely more practical for a crimefighter. A woman can’t be picking wedgies (or hiking up her tube top, for that matter) while she’s beating up villains.

Given that the original costume design was based on fetish wear, it makes sense that it was skimpy. The hotpants even worked within the campy 70s TV series aesthetic. But if Kelly really wants this new series to be more realistic, the hero’s costume needs to reflect that by being something a person could actually wear when taking on bad guys.

Hell, even the current version of Clark Kent on Smallville is running around in a leather jacket and jeans rather than spandex, and he doesn’t need to protect his internal organs from stray bullets the way Diana Prince does. Realistic superheroes need practical outfits, not skimpy exploitative leotards to titillate the network execs and basement dwellers.

So why can’t an amazon princess have more than one suit of clothes?

Even Lynda Carter had a star-spangled wetsuit used for a swimming scene in one episode of the old series, as well as the big puffy cape used for formal occasions.
