While Stargate Universe may have seen its run cut short by Syfy, actor David Hewlett says he doesn’t think this is the end for the Stargate franchise.
“I think Stargate is the perfect franchise to apply to the multi-platform [model],” he told TV Squad. “I know they were trying to get games going and stuff, but it was a victim, I think, to the big shake-up at MGM.”
“It would seem very foolish to me to let it go that easily,” he says. “At the very least, I would hope to see some kind of movies, whether they’re SGU movies or Atlantis movies or SG-1.”
He added: “If I was to guess, [a potential movie] would maybe be an amalgamation of the three.”
Stargate Universe producer Joseph Mallozzi previously ruled out the possibility of producing a full third season of the show, but later revealed that the series could return as a series of television movies.
I hope David Hewlett is right because I really am going to miss Stargate Universe. It’s a really well acted, written and paced in spite of what the nay sayers have uttered.
I just finished watching episode 15 of season 2 tonight and feel saddened that SGU will soon end. Robert Carlyle is still an amazing actor. Give me SGU over Atlantis any day. Nice to see McKay again.
Atlantis > SGU
Really? atlantis > SGU? We are all titled to our opinions.. however… Atlantis was going nowhere with no real plots or anything. And the “wrath”. What a silly childish enemy. I mean.. at least with the goa’uld (sp?), they had personalities. Backstories. etc. The wrath. They weren’t even scary intimidating or nothing. They just stood their in a straight line waiting for colonel sheppard to shoot down like some bad carnival game. Even the series makes fun of the barely 2D characters. You could have redone the enemies as a bunch of giant “big birds” form sesame street and it wouldn’t have changed the series at all. I mean, really, 5 years and we don’t even have a real name for any of the wrath characters, nor any real back stories or really anything. Again.. they are all big yellow birds. It would be interesting to know exactly how many lines were spoken by “wrath” or about them (who they are). In the grand scheme of the series, I bet that’s a pathetically low number.
Don’t get me wrong. It was a fun show, and yah, I am a fan of it. But it was a “brain off” show. A show you could sit and watch drooling all over yourself in a vegetative sate. SGU was more of a character study. Again, I’m sure others will disagree, but I felt like it was going somewhere. It was much more of an “adult” show than SG-1 or Atlantis ever was or could have been. There were lots of open questions and intrigue. The use of camera lighting and timing added to the atmosphere of the show. The sense of danger and conflict as well as the sort of hopelessness of being stranded billions of light years from home. IMO, SGU had the potential for being the best of all 3. (but 2 seasons really makes it hard to judge it). Their were problems of course. Some character interactions didn’t really work that well. As well as the whole “stranded far from home” thing was done by atlantis, and hey Star trek voyager. I don’t think it’s over used yet, but it wasn’t a new concept. It did make SGU feel like atlantis at first. To that end, I think SGU is what atlantis was supposed to be and wasn’t.
I will really be sad to to see SGU end, I really liked the show and I have no idea why it gets so poor ratings. Oh wait, maybe it’s because the sy-fy network really has gone downhill. Maybe if sy-fy actually showed less wrestling and fake ghost hunter shows, and more actual science fiction, maybe people would still watch their network
Agreed. I guess you have to fill the time slots with something.. but I find it really odd.. amusing.. disturbing.. that a “science fiction” station has “wrestling”. Maybe if they were wrestling in space it might make more sense :P.
Yeah I think it’s kind of like how Cartoon Network started getting bad a few years ago. When you’re a cartoon channel starting to show non cartoon shows, it kind of doesn’t make sense anymore. I think Sy Fy is going the same direction. It doesn’t help that so many people are dropping their cable providers because no one has much good on anymore, in favor of netflix and hulu and other online sources. The cable companie and channels need to get with the times.
Still cant understand all the hate towards SGU . It’s a wonderfull show that suffered from a slow start . It’s a shame that brilliant writing and acting must go away and be replaced by SCIFI’s horrible movies , wrestling , and reality shows .
True that man, they say ppl now adays just dont want to watch full length shows that are drawn out and many seasons.. but i think that is bull.
At first their was a lot of pull back from stargate fans. SGU had quite a different format from Atlantis and SG-1. Some die hard fans actually boycotted SGU. That’s not to say that is what killed the series. But IMO what killed it is poor planing. You can’t just create a spin off series that is radically different and not realize that you are essentially going to over turn a lot of your regular viewers. It’s of course not always true, but generally people who watched SG-1 probably watched atlantis. The formats were similar enough and built off of each other. It was easy to slide from one series to the other. So.. atlantis is going to inherit viewers from SG-1 and have the potential to be a success with minimal effort. But that’s not the case with SGU. If you are a die hard stargate fan, you are either going to love it or absolutely hate it because of the different format. That means your fan base has to completely rebuild itself. For a science fiction show, that takes time. More than 2 years. And changing time slots every 4 weeks (like they practically did with SGU) will kill any series. They either didn’t take this in consideration or didn’t want to wait. They claim “monetary concerns”. Which sure, perhaps the series constantly ran over budget or whatever. But that’s really code for “we didn’t like it and wanted to get rid of the show in favor for more wrestling”. If you are going to take on a franchise, you do you due diligence, which they obviously didn’t do. The Stargate franchise is a big and expensive franchise. If they weren’t prepared to commit to it, they shouldn’t have done it in the first place. Instead, they committed to SGU before a script was even written. Almost nothing about the show was developed at the time. That means they jumped on the show because the other two were a success. They didn’t care what it was. The thought was they probably would automatically inherit viewers from the other stargate series. Again.. poor planning on the networks part. But.. I’m glad we at least had 2 seasons.
SGU has brilliant writing and has become a quality sci-fi show of which there are really few these days! What could have been. At least there will be no time for it to jump the shark.
I’ve watched Stargate from the beginning and was a nay sayer of SGU in its first season.
By the end of that season, I was won over completely!
I’ll miss SGU. I loved the other 2 series, but SGU took that story to the next level. Unfotunately, the naysayers won. So be it. However, I will treasure the two seasons of the best series the franchise ever produced. It’s the Star Trek DS9 of the Stargate franchise. Fresh, relentless and dramatic. A true loss for real scf-fi fans. Hopefully, they’ll give me something as compelling in the future, even though it’ll probably end up being more slackstick to appease the casual fans.
To discontinue stargate must be one of the geatest mistakes ever!!! Will miss it….
Stargate Universe was something I itched all week to watch. I got my fix via hulu as a person with a life can’t meet my television at a scheduled time. Syfail needs to get back to basics, but it’s all corporate so blame their owners. If it’s not a quick-rich, dump it, go the route of every other station and drill out reality shows and Joke Hunters. They have some great shows but people watch them online and the nielson ratings are completely innaccurate and reliant on cable boxes. I can tell you now that not a single satellite dish receiver has a phone line plugged into it.
If they want to make it big and keep a show like stargate going, they will just have to air it Internet only, link it through facebook and hulu together. Trying to drill out over 200k profit an episode is unrealistic if you rely entirely on cable ratings to something 95% of your fan base lives online and majority likely view this only online.
I’ll keep checking each few weeks for a new stargate update. I expect to hear news of an upcoming release within the coming year.
