Fringe Ratings Hit a Low Friday

March 21, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 8 Comments

Come on people!  If we want a new season of Fringe, we’re going to have to start doing a lot better!

The Fox series hit a new ratings low Friday evening.  The latest installment was down 13% to 3.8 million viewers and a 1.3 rating in the adult demo.

There’s a glimmer of hope in the news.  Overall, ratings were down for all networks and series last week with the start of daylight savings time.   And it didn’t help that the new episode was up against the NCAA tournament on CBS.

And there’s still some good news that the show is doing better on Friday evenings than a lot of other series Fox has put there.

But if you want to see season four, you need to start tuning in on Fridays.  Or leave you set onto Fox when you go out!  And it’s time to start calling in favors from family, friends and anyone else you can muster to start watching the show when it airs.

It makes me mad that 3.8M in FOX is considered low enough for cancellation, while Being Human gets less than 2M on SyFy and is hailed as a huge success!

I still haven’t found anything that shows there is any benefit to my watching the show live unless I am a Nielsen family.

Is DirecTV reporting viewing numbers from my receivers? If not then it doesn’t matter what any of us non-Nielsen people do.

Think about it, there was a LOT of coverage on the whole Japanese earthquake/tsunami that same night.

The problem with Fridays in general is that shows on that day can suffer due to holiday weekends like Fringe did on Valentine’s weekend and President’s Day weekend respectively.

In this case, it was mostly just act an of God.

Either way, it was #2 in it’s timeslot and demo. So, while sad, it’s not the end. It’s been either #1 or #2 the whole season… that’s not a bad position to help it’s cause into getting a 4th season.

I just hope they wrap it because a season 5 might not happen.

I think ratings were down across the board because of daylight savings time. That and CBS was running the NCAA tournament. Still, Fox was looking for a 1.8 (I don’t really know what that means.) when they moved it so a 1.3 isn’t good.

I wonder how accessible “Fringe” is to new viewers. I was just really tickled by the way Walter reacted to William/Olivia but a new viewer wouldn’t get that relationship. I wish I could temporarily wipe out all my knowledge of “Fringe” and then go back and re-watch Friday’s ep. It would be interesting to see how it played.

I don’t have a TV ( :-/ ) but I usually watch it on Hulu Saturday or Sunday.

I don’t think any program Fox has outside American Idol could compete with NCAA March Madness. I thought that was the whole reason they skipped those three weeks of new programming in previous years. They’re doing it with Bones again this season, why not with Fringe as well? There are people watching the games who don’t even follow college basketball simply because they’ve filled out brackets to be part of the fun and frustration with their friends and co-workers 🙂

It’s like debuting a winter replacement show head to head against the Super Bowl. Sure, you’re going to get some viewers, but seriously, you’d be lucky to outdraw the Puppy Bowl. Just start on another day and call it a Win.

I was wondering that too… I’m in Canada. Will watching it live here help at all?? I know most US networks don’t give a flying frak about what goes on outside the borders, but , still… would it help?

Well as it stands, there was some report last night that Fringe may have indeed been renewed for a fourth season.

    Can any one confirm this?
