Remembering Dwayne McDuffie

February 23, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

Dwayne-McDuffieWhile many fans may not immediately recognize the name Dwayne McDuffie, odds are that many of you will know some of the animated and comic book projects he’s worked on in the past few years.

McDuffie was the co-creator of Emmy Award winning animated TV series “Static Shock.” McDuffie created or co-created more than a dozen comic series including “Damage Control,” “Icon” and “Xombi.” He wrote stories for numerous other comics including, “Spider-Man,” “Batman: Legends of The Dark Knight” and “The Tick.” He also was nominated for two of TV’s Emmy Awards for “Static Shock,” according to his biography on his website, dwaynemcduffie.com.

McDuffie passed away Monday at the age of 49, according to Reuters.

“Dwayne McDuffie left a lasting legacy on the world of comics that many writers can only aspire to,” Dan DiDio, co-publisher of DC Comics media division DC Entertainment, said in a statement on Tuesday.

“He will not only be remembered as the extremely gifted writer whose scripts have been realized as comic books, in television shows and on the silver screen, but as the creator or co-creator of so many of the much-loved Milestone characters, including Static Shock,” DiDio said.

Some very important works were left out of the listing of this man’s accomplishments.
    1. The justice League animated series
    2. The Newly released All Star Superman DvD His devotion to an industry he loved crossed color and gender barriers. Lets not oversimplify the scope of Mr. McDuffie’s work by in a blurb boxing his accomplishments into the Milestone line of comics which he helped create. Most of the readers on this site may not know what Milestone was or represented, however most have enjoyed the Justice league cartoon , and will probable love the the All Star Superman DvD. All i’m saying is make sure credit is given where it is due.

I’m a little suprised that you guys overlooked his work on Ben 10, Teen Titans and the Justice League/Unlimited animated series. However… for many in the African American kids who never read or cared about comic… Jon Stewart will always be the Green Lantern. RIP.
