Hamm Calls Superman “A Young Man’s Game”

January 18, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 3 Comments

Those of you hoping to see Emmy-winning actor Jon Hamm don the cape and tights as Superman in the next Super-installment will be disappointed by our next story.

The actor, who has been linked to the role over the course of its development, says that playing the Man of Steel is a young man’s game.

“No, and I have talked to Zack quite a bit. We had some looping and reshoots and stuff to do on ‘Sucker Punch,’ but I think that’s a young man’s game. I think I’ve aged out of that one by now,” he says.

Hamm added that he’s “fine” on “aging out” of the Superman role. “There are plenty of other people available to put on tights,” he says.

Mr. Hamm is very wise in his decision. Superman, I think is kind of played out. The less than stelllar box office of the last one bears this out. Until they make this movie more representative of America’s mixed ethnic culture, it is a tired franchise. The last Superman movie had a “lilly white” cast except for Kal Penn. Even the extras in the crowd scenes were all white with no diviersity displayed at all. Just like the 1940’s 50’s & 60’s in the comic books. Suffice it to say, Superman is not the only movie guilty of this, but it is so high profile it is easy to zero in on it. Hey Studio Heads, wake up, America is a “Melting Pot”! Please make your movies reflect this.

The box-office figures from the last movie, I think, had less to do with Superman being “played out” than with the movie just not being all that good. I don’t want to watch Superman be a stalker, nor be witness to Instant Krypton(tm) “Just add water”. I want to watch him beat the bad guy in spectacular fashion. is that so difficult?

Apparently it is that difficult because the movie makers CANNOT even decide on a Superman, much less a compelling plot and a decent storyline.
