“Fringe” Gets “Firefly” Treatment (Opening Credits Anyway)

December 20, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 15 Comments

In case you didn’t know it, Fox has moved “Fringe”  to Fridays.

Some fans recall that Fox once killed another great sci-fi show, “Firefly” in the same time slot.

The following video mashes up “Fringe” with the opening credits of “Firefly.”

It’s pretty cool.  Check it out below:

Do you know what the episode title of the first Fringe episode to air on a Friday will be?

    “Firefly”.
    No joke.

FOX did not kill firefly. Low ratings did. Which other network offered Whedon the chance to finance and air his show?

This is coming from someone who loved firefly.

“Firefly” had low ratings because the show was constantly preempted, moved, shown out of order and poorly advertised which were all FOX’s responsibility.

I blame the FOX decision to make Joss go back and shoot a different episode to run in place of the pilot, and the wild rampant speculation in the trades about why FOX would do that led to fear, uncertainty and doubt amongst the casual fans, who ended up not watching the show from the get-go because of the rumors about why FOX made Joss reshoot.

Now we all know how erroneous that decision was, and every other FOX choice emanating from that first bad move was merely a chain of inevitable betrayals (preemptions, postponements, continuity carnage) creating a universe where we only have 13 Firefly episodes instead of 2 or 3 seasons worth.

      Totally FOX’s fault.

I can’t agree with Summer more. Fox has always treated its sci-fi fans as second class citizens compared to its sports, animation, and reality show audiences.

As a dear friend reminded me, the X-files managed to carve out a niche on Friday nights, and I hope Fringe can do the same, but Fox just does not stand behind their sci-fi shows. Fringe is worthy of viewing any night of the week, but just because we’re geeks doesn’t mean we don’t have something to do on Friday nights.

Sadly, I didn’t know Firefly existed until Serenity hit DVD, and I totally missed the first season of Fringe. As a result, this is especially painful for me… I get to see the hammerfall coming, but I can’t do anything more than wince before it lands! Oh, and SYFY sucks hot monkey-balls… Merlin and Wrestling? but no Caprica and/or SGU?! Idiots.

FOX does have a bad history of toying with sci-fi fans, but they do have a history of HAVING sci-fi fans. Sure FOX seems to delight in canceling all of our favorite shows, but they are at least willing to give sci-fi a chance unlike a lot of other stations. Not to mention, they have had a longer and in my opinion a better line up of quality sci-fi than even compared to the Sci-Fi (or however their spelling it) channel does.

I am another who missed out on firefly when it aired.Being a wheadon fan I was both baffled &annoyed when I realized not only had it aired it wasnt coming back!Of coarse this elevated to pissed after I finally watched it &was left wanting more.Obviously Im not alone either I swear within every batch of comments related to sci-fi someone will bring up the”firefly incident”.
I love fringe and more so for its tribute to one of my favs.however I really never liked fox.I find it hard support them to begin with but you are right(the folks that said it)we need to support this show or they will cancel. So this is what i say happens If and when they talk about pulling it everyone needs to unite &block fox from your homes!Tell others to do the same anyone that likes these shows than send them a letter (yes an actual letter)telling them that you did so.Now im gonna join those that are re-watching firefly(r.i.p.)
also my spell check is broke so dont even start!

I think people have legitimate gripes when it comes to FOX but overall I think it’s hard to complain. They gave us two seasons of “Dollhouse”, which was pretty good, and two seasons of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”, which was one of my all-time favorite shows. And now we have three seasons of “Fringe”. They’re making the effort but I think it just kind of comes down to numbers. If you’re on cable and you’re pulling in 2 mil. viewers a show you’re a hit. But “Finge’s” 4.5 or 5 mil. per is well below FOX’s average and not even in the same ballpark as stuff like “CSI”. But at least FOX has a sense of humor and knows exactly what the score is. (This is sort of awesome.)
