In a Grinch-like move, SyFy has decided the final half of season two will be the last for “Stargate: Universe.”
The final 10 episodes of the series will run in the spring of 2011.
The cancellation brings to a close a long chapter of SyFy offering new episodes in the “Stargate” franchise.
Mark says
Well, syfy is right up there with Fox in my book. F*!#! them!
Chavalier says
ARRRGGGHHH!!!! The good die young and apparently the great die shortly after childbirth. I guess syfy had to make room for some more wrestling, or another Ghost Hunters spinoff. This is just pathetic.
Briguy523 says
I wonder how much this has to do with the MGM money issues. Hey, if Bond is having a tough time getting funding, what chance does Stargate have?
Kyle Nin says
Actually, I’m surprised it lasted this long, considering the ratings. I just hope this doesn’t ruin the chances of getting those “SG-1” and “Atlantis” DVD movies that they originally promised.
Whacko says
NOooooooooooo…. I need my dose of Stargate! What other good Sci-Fi shows are there (Beside Doctor Who) ???
Will says
Dissappointed, but not surprised considering the ratings. This and Caprica’s cancellation makes me think that if a show isn’t a ratings hit right off the bat, I shouldn’t keep watching.
Michael Falkner says
The really bad thing about this is that Syfy didn’t have the fortitude to tell the actors. They found out through Twitter and the news.
Is there anything genre-related and worthwhile on the network now?
Sihnon says
And now I have nothing to watch on SyFy… they can frak off as far as I am concerned now! Enjoy the wrestling!
ShadowtheBlade says
WTF!?!?!?! What do they have left? NOTHING! This network sucks! I am so pissed I want to go to their main office and take a s*** on the doorstep! I need more exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SR says
This is absolutely ridiculous!!! I am soooooooo sick of networks canceling programs. Especially when it is usually their fault by splitting up the season and then moving them around. Why watch TV shows anymore when they first come out? It is better to wait until they are on DVD. Then, if they get canceled, you can avoid watching them or, at least know, they had a short life.
SGU is a really good show with characters with a lot of depth. The stories were getting more and more interesting. No need to watch SyFy anymore. Bye bye Syfy!
Sam says
So long SyFy. What a crock!
Joe from ct says
This was the last show on this network that I went out of my way to watch. I love Eureka, and warehouse 13, but I can miss them and catch up, no biggy. I kick myself everytime I miss, SGU first run… I even got a special hook-up to watch it at work. It’s sad that a station, that started out to fill the SCI-FI nitch, has run as far from it as it could, and has become another trash network. I’m done with SF FY. They can take there network and shove it where the sun dosen’t shine.
AndyMac says
I’m pretty pissed. Not surprised but still pissed. That leaves two things worth watching on Syfy, Warehouse 13 and Eureka. And we don’t get to see them nearly often enough. The Christmas specials were great but just made me miss the real shows even more.
SciFi Channel used to be my “go to” channel when I was looking for stuff to play in the background while working. Now they don’t even do decent daytime marathons during the week anymore. More often than not it’s Ghost Hunters, Fact or Faked or that boring-ass auction show.
Not that this channel was doing right by the sci-fi genre before changing their name to syphilis but things have really gone into the crapper ever since they started to “Imagine Greater”.
Alverant says
Sometimes I wonder if it’s even worth watching a new SF series at all since the odds are good that it’s going to get canned suddenly. It’s just not worth the emotional investment. I think I’m going to switch to older SF and get boxed sets. At least that way there won’t be any cancellation surprises.
hilsto says
I don’t watch anything on Syfy anymore. Guess a scifi fan like me isn’t their target audience. I’ll be watching Fringe on FOX and Doctor Who on BBC and…is there any other scifi worth watching? I can’t recall any at the moment. Walking Dead is horror more than scifi. Hm. Nothing is coming to mind.
Lejon from Chandler says
So, let me get this straight. Syfy now has 2 actual science fiction TV series that they actively produce (Eureka and Sactuary, right?) – and a lot of really bad movies they only show on Saturdays? Good thing I canceled cable.
Lee in WV says
Well, I wasn’t as into it as most on here, but it was getting better.
And for those that say there is nothing left on SyFy: what about Eureka, Warehouse 13 and Sanctuary? Those are great shows still on SyFy.
Walter says
When they canceled Farscape I gave up on syfy for a year and only started watching again when the mini series was announced. Now that they have canceled everything I watch I think I’ll just take them out of my channel list.
Lon says
Haven.
Everyone is overlooking Haven. SyFy still produces Haven. It has concluded it’s first season and has been renewed for a second season. I know that probably doesn’t assuage the anger over SG:U’s cancellation. Haven started off slow and I almost dropped it. I know quite a few probably did. But it picked up speed and I loved the last few episodes. The cliff hanger at the end was (IMO) one of the best I’ve seen recently.
So, check out Haven?
seth says
i agree with everyone else… im not into wrestling im not into auction shows, so what else does syfy have? one or two halfway decent scifi shows..warehouse 13 and eureka. i checked out of those ages ago.
I guess ill go back rewatch my sg1 atlantis and rewatch all the startreks. Man i long for the day of good story arcs and well written scifi…
And ill cross my fingers, perhaps there will be another stargate show in several years. Tho itll prob get canned quickly too………
Tom from Peoria says
Canceled?! Me thinks they needed another time slot for ‘rastling’ huh? What a huge pile of steaming bovine excrement!
Warehouse, Eureka, and Sanctuary are all that remains of sci fi on MTV..uh..I mean SyFy…..how could I confuse the two?
Keiran Halcyon says
But for how much longer?
hilsto says
Those shows are lightweights and no comparable to what we’ve lost the last few years. Fine for some I guess, but when I want light tv I watch Castle or Burn Notice or Leverage which does the lightweight/bantery thing much better anyway. I don’t automatically flock to shows because they happen to have fantasy elements in them. I’ve got enough light shows these days. There has to be something more there. *sigh*
hilsto says
And by “those shows” I mean what’s left on Syfy.
Scott Galvin says
worst part is the characters were finally starting to come into their own and the stories where being written better. I must agree with everyone else SCYFY should be SUCKS network now.
AndyMac says
I forgot about Sanctuary. It got a little slow for a while but it’s been really good lately and we’ve been enjoying it a lot.
Skiznot says
“SYFY – We’ve got Aliens! We’re working on new ways to Alienate fans as we speak.”
On the plus side I think we’re better for having gotten the two seasons that we did and I will continue to be inspired by SGU. I’ll also try to support the actors and creative teams in new projects but if they show up on the network that shall not be named it’ll be a dilemma.
I will continue to be inspired by the work the Stargate team did on SGU and I’ll look for ways to thank them.
Alverant says
hilsto I agree that Leverage is a great show. I hope Kaos (aka Wil Wheaton) returns for a third episode. He must pay for what he did to Lucile II.
Mich67 says
Worst Christmas present ever. Kinda makes you wonder if you should invest your time in good shows when you can’t be sure the networks will give them a fighting chance. What did they expect…ratings like Lost or something.
jojo says
Noooooooooo!!!!!!!!!! It was just starting to become more interesting. SySf has 4 actual science fiction TV series that they actively produce (Eureka and Sanctuary, Haven & Warehouse 13 right?) So are they the next show on the chopping block? I hope not. But they do need more room for another Ghost hunters spin off or another wrestling show. So i have to say this SyFy sucks & they can go F**** them self. They have made SyFy just another Channel.
F!?k SyFy says
Please shut SyFy down. This is a ridiculous joke. This was the best F’ng show on TV. Maybe it had bad ratings because of it’s time slot. Maybe it had bad ratings because nobody watches live TV any longer. What a bunch of morons!
A_Fan_But_not_a_CryBaby says
It kind of shocks me to see everywhere how a lot of people over-react to the cancellation of a television show. To put my statement in perspective, a TV show is entertainment, yet people form bonds that when broken cry like babies and are angry and pissed and swear at people, networks, etc, when in real life there are countries with civil war, rape, murder, starvation and so much other sufferring going on in the world. I think it’s a sign of unhealthiness.
My Reaction? I’m sad cause the story looked like it was finally going somewhere. So I’m a bit disappointed. It’s not like the end of the world though or will affect me in anything beyond that.
Barry B says
Short sighted as always. Glad we got what we did. If it’s mindless it seems to last forever on TV. Why has big bang done so well? Half hour plus cheap sets???
muckraker says
Oh, frak. This is currently my fave SF show, so no wonder they are killing it. I just hope they wrap things up.
Maybe if SyFy coud somehow combine wrestling with SF, they could have a successful series.
Cdub says
So without a Stargate franchise show on the air…odds of SyFy lasting another year as a network….opening at 20/1…
Steve says
So, it’s really just the Wrestling Channel now?
Steve says
Seriously, they only have 3 scifi/fantasy shows now. Haven is really expense to produce so that won’t last. As far as the new shows go, Being Human was great on the BBC, just remaking it with American accents and cutting out the naughty bits isn’t going to make a hit for them.
CW and BBC America have more SciFi than SyFy. I hope Caprica and SGU start going straight to Netflix and show them how much money they are losing.
AndyMac says
There’s nothing wrong with a show like Big Bang Theory. It’s funny and it’s geeky. Sure it’s pointless but what’s wrong with that?
What gets me is the huge number of reality shows. They are every where.
Don Bell says
There is nothing left for me to watch on SyFy. I’m not into wrestling. Good by!
Andy says
I only hope they give it a decent ending and don’t leave it on a cliffhanger. Have the final 10 episodes been filmed yet anybody?
Dan Bergin says
The last bastion of science fiction gone down the drain. Enjoy your wrestling, I’m cancelling.
PsedoIntellectual says
………..
I’m mad, and I…..am saddened….I won’t say anymore, lest I start making threats.
Michael Hickerson says
In a post on Blastr!, SyFy says they’ve got three new shows coming up in 2011…the remake of “Being Human” (which I just got screeners of the other day but can’t bear to watch right now…I’m too annoyed at SyFy to be fair to the screeners), “Alphas” and the new “BSG” prequel.
Honestly, moving SGU to Tuesdays in the fall was the kiss of death. I wouldn’t be shocked to see them burn off the series like they did with Caprica.
tensaibaka says
Well, I shall never buy another DVD from a show on the syfy network unless it has made to at least a 4th year. I was going to buy the DVD’s for SGU, but forget it now. The only way I will even consider buying the SGU DVD’s is if they give us an extra sendoff like they did with Farscape.
Speaking of which, has anybody heard any early news of fan sites teaming up to try and save the show, or at least get a massive email/snail mail campaign going to get us a conclusion for the show?
Tim the Avatarless says
Totally done with SYFY now. They are just NOT about science fiction any more. Maybe they can cancel their CEO and I might come back. Nah … they are done.
Jerry Bindas says
i’m definitely disappointed to hear the news..though won’t condemn the entire network because of it..Eureka & Warehouse 13 are still good..i personally like the wrestling, tho probably should be on a different station..SyFy needs to work on coming up w/some good original movies, should work to get the rights to show the current/recent(and older )Doctor Who series again, and keep working to develop more solid shows..
James from CO says
Although I wasn’t a SGU fan, this is very disappointing. The other posters are right, Syfy has gone down the tubes. I watch every episode of Eureka, Warehouse 13, Sanctuary and Haven but I have to wonder when they will get cancelled out of the blue as well. SciFi used to be the only channel I watched. I barely watch Syfy at all. I tune in for the shows that I like and change the channel as fast as I can.
Jarrod says
Here’s the thing with SG:U – it required too much suspension of disbelief to keep up the concept, and I blame the Ancient communication stones. It’s not what they do with the stones and what the stones do that I object to…it’s what they never did.
It’s not like it was Stargate: The Next Generation where it takes place many, many years after the original incarnation. It had Daniel Jackson in several episodes. In the SG:U world, Rodney McKay and Samantha Carter are both alive. They’re the two people who know more about Ancient technology than anybody else in the galaxy. So why is it they NEVER USED THE STONES TO GET THOSE TWO ON THE SHIP AND ACTUALLY FIX THE STUPID THING?!? Rodney and Sam would have had the ship home in an hour and a half tops. If I know what resources are available to characters on the show, and if I know the other characters must know what resources are available to them, and if they constantly choose to let Rush run around willy-nilly up there instead of using what would solve their main problem, then what’s the point of watching? It’s insulting to me as a viewer.
Never have the communication stones, and you never have that issue. Not having the stones also has the extra added benefit of getting rid of all the melodrama back Earth. Then they might have had an interesting show. Instead, it was just a lazy ripoff of stuff I’ve seen elsewhere.
For me, the show was a weird mashup of Battlestar, Voyager, and Lost with a little Stargate window dressing. At first I watched because I was curious. Then I watched hoping it would get better. Then I watched out of some sort of obligation to the brand. Then I decided I wouldn’t watch, and I didn’t miss it. When I need a Stargate fix, I have fifteen seasons of SG-1 and Atlantis on DVD (blu-ray, please!) I can pick through, and every single one was better than SG:U.
deathby2 says
I’ve lost faith in TV networks long ago, now I watch anything I find interesting. In fact I prefer new shows. I love when they cancel stuff, its means new shows to replace the old. Now if SyFy wants me to watch it, it can request Cumcast to remove it from the highest package that I refuse to pay $50 for.
Summer Brooks says
Scifi Channel used to be my most watched channel, many years ago. While we poked fun at the name change to Syfy, I was also sad, because it was the dropping of the green flag on their new adventure into other programming choices, and moving away from the speculative fiction storytelling most of us here cherish.
We should not be surprised at the programming shift, but it’s very hard not to be disappointed in how suddenly they are dropping support for scripted shows they’ve cultivated, and doing so in such a way that it hurts fans, cast and production staff alike.
I cannot think of any still-running shows besides Destination Truth and Warehouse 13 that I’m keeping up with anymore, outside of the occassion marathons of Moonlight, Firefly, and the random Charlie Jade episodes that show up at 1am. This makes me sad… so many of us want more scifi programming, yet we have fewer and fewer options. Other than supporting web series with potential, and fan projects, and hope the next movie franchise reboot doesn’t break more than it jump starts, what can we do next?
Ironically, when The 4400 and The Dead Zone were on USA, I was watching USA, TNT and Scifi in equal amounts. Since then, I think I watch more on TNT and USA than on any other network.
Gerald says
This is an put rage. Sufi chanel is a crock. What’s next flue birds vs wrestling. I am so made my head is going to explode this is the worst news i have heard in a long time! Oh mother
Chris Martens says
F U SYFY… F U!!!
Tammy Smith says
I couldn’t get into SGU or Caprica (too many unlikeable characters). And SGU never seemed like a Stargate series anyway. At least Sanctuary doesn’t seem like it’s in any danger of cancellation. Still detest SyFy, though. I watch more BBC America.
Emily says
What the crap is going on? Are you kidding me? I was going to pick this show up again and give it another chance. Someone said this was the one good show on the channel.
I guess Syfy just decided their lineup did not suck enough….?
TallGrrl says
Another space for wrasslin’ and ghost huntin’ in the lineup.
Oh, and Americanized (aka censored and sanitized) versions of already cool shows like “Being Human”.
Yeesh.
Eric says
Those low down dirty dogs! This is a great show!
Jayson says
First Star Trek, now this! Someone at Syfy probably couldn’t stand the Intelligent Design notion of a Big Bang message.
Long live Doctor Who!!!
Jake says
Sorry fer the Cussin’, but….F..K NBC COMCAST UNI-F..K IT. The “SyFy” channel is now Vince Mcmahon’s bitch! Just like NBC and USA is. Don’t expect anymore str8 to home disc movies…EVER! Cuz these fools at MGM need a loan to make their like 23rd or 24th bond pile of crap. And don’t forget that Hobbit movie they promissed…Yeah right. Sorry I’m yelling everyone. There just isn’t much left on tv worthwhile to watch anymore.
{Note from SoSF: Frak or Frell works just as well and remains PG-13 since we have a wide age-group that visits this site – but our sentiments are with you 100%}
VyseN1 says
I am beyond pissed right now. This is my favorite show currently on TV. With this move, SyFy has no hard, deep, and dark original programming anymore. Sure Eureka, and Warehouse 13 are fun, but where is the darker, edgier show!
SyFy is dead to me now, all they are going to do is air more Wrestling and reality shows.
jay says
I’m not surprised, but I am disappointed. Like others here, I no longer have a reason to turn on the SyFy channel. Its the end of a TV era.
How about Socialized TV? Why don’t we Tax ourselves, set up an online Sci Fi channel, and convince producers to bring their shows and their advertisers to us???? Okay- Any volunteers to run this? 🙂
KireK says
I unrelated news, SyFy cancels the following series, Eureka, Warehouse 13, Sanctuary and Haven and changes their name to focus on their new market..
“The Reality Network Of Crappy Shows”
Summer Brooks says
Because of some Twitter chatter and a few blog posts I’ve come across the past few days, I have just added the book “Reality Bites Back” by Jennifer Pozner to the list of books I’m buying myself for my birthday/Solstice/Christmas.
@jay as for an alternative, Illusion On Demand was trying to do just that (see Slice of SciFi #134), but near as I can tell, they let their domain lapse in Oct 2009, so the links in the show notes have been removed since they’d only take you to a spam page.
Illusion TV was based in NY, but I can’t tell if they’re still operating or not, just from a cursory traipse through Google.

This blows- I agree that SYFY sucks even more- F OFF and DIE SYFY

Hey Google! Are you listening? I have the perfect material for Google TV. So the networks won’t let you stream their content? How about you buy the best shows getting canceled and stream them yourself? Just saying.

Good bye syfy.
Everybody…
But why they did this to us?
scifi fan says
I have no surprise with this happening, first the show was dead slow, and very boring in the beginning. The characters were an insult to the franchise and when those of us that had supported the franchise from the beginning were call names and told to leave and did, the numbers were just not there.
They did the same bad pacing with Capria, the soap opra appraoch and characters that you just loved to hate. I admit I did acquire some affection for several characters ( except Russ who I secretly had hoped had died in that episode when he was left on that planet that time). The insults took their toll and I felt like the network suits were completely out of touch with reality the way they destroyed the franchise. The stories just lacked any real direction and had to be watch several time to stay awake for the entire episode.
Like so e other here, Haven has some of the same fun and free appeal of SG1 and I have watched every episode several times. Capra could have been lighter and more fun but they destroyed the way it was presented and was more like SGU than BSG. The suits had decided to destroy and Scifi and make the Syfy channel into what USA was in the early 90, all paranormal with some very bad cheap to make movies and some wrestling. They of coures do not want to lose a 17 year audience so they with their slight of hand keep playing like they support the genra, but actually hate it. The network president needs to be sent back to the UK like so may unneeded foreigners that only want to destroy our country.
SGU was not a Stargate show and after all the insults I am not very sad those that turned their backs on fans like me have failed in their proversion of the franchise as well as missing an opportunity with Caprica.
AndyMac says
Lighter and more fun? Really? There’s plenty of that crap over on ABC, CBS and NBC. And check out Comedy Central. They specialize in lighter and more fun.
Talk about boring. Haven is a snooze fest. I watched it for at least 6 episodes. It was the same show every single week. Some person/peeople has/have some strange power and they have to figure it out before someone else gets frozen or catches on fire. They kept taking about the “troubles” but we never ever got any closer to finding out what those were.
There’s plenty of light and fun stuff on TV. There should be darker stuff too. If some people aren’t into SGU that’s their choice just like it’s mine not to watch reality TV. You don’t have to watch SGU if you don’t want to and I don’t have to watch Haven if I don’t want to.
By the way, it’s RUSH, not RUSS.
GamerFromJump says
To be honest, I dropped SGU from my roster for the same reason as Lost; everybody acting like sociopaths (except Eli)! A large part of what made SG1 and SGA great was watching the teams. If I wanted to watch a show where people keep backstabbing each other, I’d watch reality* television. Supposedly it was getting better, but we’ll never know now, will we?
In the absence of Trek, it’s nice to see sci-fi that shows a bit of humanity’s better side. SGU was not doing that.
* For Charles Manson’s view of “reality”
CthulhuSaves says
The real shame of this is twofold. First, that when they finally take a shot at doing something with more SCI in the FI, and less silly fantasy, fewer people watch it. SGU was an attempt to switch gears and make the story more realistic, more like Arthur C. Clarke style material, as opposed to the old Stargate, which featured characters that were practically superheroes, always whipping out some miracle to save the day within an hour, and the aliens were always humanoid and spoke perfect English. I was thrilled at this change from goofiness into realism. (And granted, the above poster’s concerns regarding personalities are fully appreciated and valid, I simply think that sort of thing can be changed over time, and in fact it appeared to finally be happening.)
Secondly, that so many people seem to crave a return to the style of scifi TV that the old Stargate and Atlantis represented. God, is that ever depressing. I, too, had fun with the old stuff, but honestly, it was cheese, and we had it for over a decade. It really seemed like we were ready to handle more intelligent fare, but if the ratings and feedback are accurate, we weren’t, and that just makes my worldview go bleak. Damned shame. (Note: I’m no saying *every* ep of SGU was great or intelligent, because there were certainly some awful ones along the way. I’m speaking more of the overall approach to more realistic storytelling, which I personally crave after a decade of bubblegum scripts.)
