Warner Brothers Allows You To Up-Swap DVDS for Blu-Rays

November 1, 2010 By Michael Hickerson 3 Comments

If one of the things holding you back from upgrading from DVD to Blu-Ray is the cost of replacing much of your collection, Warner Brothers is looking to help you out.

The studio has been offering consumers the chance to swap their DVDs for BluRays for the past couple of months. It’s not free, but consumers could trade-in their DVDs plus a few extra dollars for a new copy on Blu-Ray. Until now, it had been a straight swap of the same title on DVD for the same title on Blu-Ray.

Now, Warner Brothers is opening it up a bit and will take any professionally produced and released, non-adult title DVD and allow you swap it for credit toward a new Blu-Ray title.

You can find out more about the program and what the selection is for the new Blu-Ray titles you can upgrade to HERE.

Some of the swapped titles start at only $4.95. And browsing the TV section, you can upgrade your seasons of “Chuck,” “Fringe” and “Smallville” for a lower price than at a retail outlet.

it’s a nice step to encourage customer loyalty. of course of the top of my head i wouldn’t be able to tell you which of the 500 odd dvds i own are warner. it’s not the brand i chose when i select a dvd. the title of the movie is what i’m looking for.

but it may also indicate that people aren’t jumping to blu ray as much as they were hoping. i’m very happy with dvd as most of the films i watch are pre 90s and don’t benefit by been on blu ray. that and i mostly watch films on laptops/smart phones when i’m travelling or on a small screen beside my computer monitor.

when i walk into a dvd shops in dublin the blu ray section is often large but empty of people whereas the dvd section is very busy.

just my 2c. the us market may be very different.

The last DVD player I bought was a “regular” model, mostly because the Blu-Ray player I did buy is slow to load. Add to it the fact I don’t use any of the so-called “features”, and it makes no sense for me to move up to Blu-Ray.

When I buy movies I might consider the combo offerings of Blu-Ray with a regular DVD provided the cost is in my price range, but mostly I buy regular DVDs, and even that will be infrequent as Netflix is a great option for the vast majority of movies. My last one was Kick-Ass, mostly to support the movie, and Red will likely get a nod for the same reason. Can’t think of any others.
