“Duke Nukem Forever” Rises From the Dead

September 4, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

Looks like gaming hero Duke Nukem had an extra life after all.

After “Duke Nukem Forever” was declared dead with developer 3D Realms went under last year, it now appears that Duke will be back in 2011.

At the current PAX, game developer Gearbox revealed they will finish the long in development game and release it next year.

At the event, Pitchford said Gearbox wants the game to be “the game it was supposed to be,” and suggested that he and his studio brought in people from 3D Realms to help with its completion–a process that started back in 2009.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal before the event, Pitchford revealed that the game is in a “polishing phase,” and admitted that a launch plan is not yet in place.

Seriously??? This game has been “in development” in one form or another for over a decade. I remember back in 1999 the website said it’s done “when it’s done”. Every few years it seems to come back from the dead. Yeah, we’ll see. If it was released in 1999 or 2000, it would’ve been a huge hit, lot’s o’ sales!! Today, I bet most gamers have never heard of Duke Nukem. Let’s hope if they actually release the game, it will come on PC, not just consoles.

Wow… other than the drama behind it’s constant status changes in development, does anybody really care about this game any more?

If the game doesn’t suck, I will be willing to give it a try.

I’m with Mike on this. Besides, there’s a nostalgia effect for us old-timers.

One thing the article doesn’t mention: they also had playable demo’s at PAX. You can find some footage of it on YouTube.

I’ll wait for the reviews, but if it’s any good at all, I’ll pick up a copy!

So Duke Nukem Forever will be out in 2011, or maybe it will be 2012. Perhaps Gearbox should update the code and delay it until 2013. Perhaps they should start from scratch and shoot for 2014-15.

I hope this story is true. I remember having hours of fun with Duke Nukem 3D back in 96 – 97.
