Former Doctor Rumored to Be Bilbo

Former Doctor Rumored to Be Bilbo

July 19, 2010 By Michael Hickerson 6 Comments

Assuming “The Hobbit” ever gets off the ground and running, one of the big questions surrounding it is who will play Bilbo Baggins?

If you believe former Doctor Sylvester McCoy, he’s up for the role.

McCoy hinted as much to Glen Ferris of screenrush after a recent theatrical performance.

Of course, this may be the old rumor that McCoy was in the running for the part and was director Peter Jackson’s second choice for the role after Ian Holm.

Whether or not McCoy would step into the role isn’t known.   Right now, the story is merely rumor and speculation.

McCoy played the seventh Doctor on “Doctor Who” from 1987-89.

I think McCoy is waaaay too old for the role. In the Hobbit, Bilbo is only 33 years old. So, the need to find an actor that is about 33 and chubby. Heh. They could always hire Sean Astin for it. He did alright with Samwise.

If Sylvester is Bilbo, I’ll say it now … I will see this movie at least once a week for the entire run. Yes, I loves me some Doctor Who.

I love McCoy. He would have been perfect some years ago but I think somebody younger should take it. I hate to say that.

    Somebody younger, like, say……Martin Freeman?!?!?!?!!?!?

Come on, just give him the role already and be done with it! He’s perfect.

McCoy would’ve been an awesome Bilbo in LotR, but unfortunately he is too old for the role in The Hobbit. That story is about Bilbo when he was young, when he was the same age that Frodo was when he went on his adventure on LotR.

I actually do like this Martin Freeman suggestion, though. He’s a touch older than I’d look at, but he’s got that hobbit stature and I think he’d be very good at the very reluctant hero bit.

I have to agree that McCoy is a bit long in the tooth for the prequel. Maybe if they’d done The Hobbit right after he’d finished Who, he could’ve pulled it off, but the role requires a lot more running, jumping, flinging oneself about, etc. than he’s probably capable of these days.

And I’ll third Brian’s suggestion of Martin Freeman. I think he’d make a fine Bilbo.
