“Torchwood” Will Return in 2011

June 8, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 11 Comments

After last summer’s “Children of Earth” mini-series, the BBC’s hit series “Torchwood” got a renewal notice. But news on when the series would return has been scarce.

Yesterday, fans finally got the news they’ve been yearning for–the series is coming back.

It’s just not coming back until the summer of 2011.

A new deal between the BBC, BBC Worldwide and Starz to finance production on a fourth series was announced yesterday. The new season will run ten episodes and will move the series from its hub in Cardiff to locations around the world, including the United States.

It also sounds like this could be the final series of “Torchwood.”

It’s very much the next step. It’s not a new version, it’s not a reboot. We’re simply moving countries. The show was previously a format show — monster of the week,” says producer Russell T. Davies. “The breakthrough was “Children of Earth” and that it became one long story. It’s not going to be ‘Lost’ and take 20 years to find out what’s going on. It’s going to have a most remarkable conclusion after 10 episodes.”

According to the Hollywood Reporter, elements of the script for a proposed American spin-off will be used for the first episode of the new series.

What? They’re not going to show it on BBC America like they have been?

“Torchwood” returns in 2011? Not for me. I don’t get Starz. And I probably won’t any time soon.

(Why didn’t they just leave it on BBC America?)

Kyle: Starz is co-funding it, but that doesn’t neccesarily mean they won’t still air on BBC America. The story didn’t specify, so there’s still hope. I don’t get Starz either so I hope you’re wrong.

I used to watch Torchwood on HDNet since BBCA isn’t in HD yet on DirecTV but they don’t seem to be showing it anymore. I ended up renting Children of Earth on DVD which was great because we got to see it without network logos or commercials. I will probably wait to do the same thing with Series 4, hopefully on Bluray.

I thought Torchwood got better with each season and Children of Earth was great.

If this is the final season though, can Cap’n Jack and Gwen carry the show themselves?? Will they add more characters that we’ll only have 10 episodes to get to know?

Not sure that’s going to work, esp w/RTD at the helm….still waiting for the Torchwood Song N Dance episode.

I can’t wait for the new series. Hope that Gwen Cooper and Reece will be in it. It wouldn’t be the same without them.

Yes, I’ve been reading a lot about torchwood and discovered that Americans will have new players this season. I think it could work.

I loved the show and didn’t miss an episode. but I don’t get starz and will not pay $ for the starz stations for one show! I hope BBC will bring it back to their network…Why is it when BBC has a good show like Torchwood they end it or give it to another network like Starz that a lot of people don’t get?
