Welling: “Smallville” Ends After Season 10

May 20, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 5 Comments

After a decade, the end may be near for “Smallville.”

Actor Tom Welling has said that next season will be his last on the show.

“Season 10 of Smallville will be the last season” Tom told HollywoodLife.com.

And it looks like Welling will be the only remaining original cast member on the show full time next year. EW has confirmed that Alison Mack will not be on the show full time next year but will have a recurring role as Chloe Sullivan.

I’m truly humbled by the love and loyalty of all the fans whose enthusiasm has carried me — along with a cast and crew which has become my second family — over the past 9 and a half years,” Mack said in a statement. “Out of respect for the amazingly loyal fans and the place I will always have in my own heart for Chloe, I’m coming back for several episodes next season to tie up Chloe’s Smallville legacy properly.”

“It’s been a life-changing ride, and I look forward to what lies ahead with the strength of a ‘superhero’ as my foundation,” Mack added.

I love the show and I’ve been with it since the beginning (bit of a masochist that way), but I have to say that it’s about time. They’ve pretty much run out of stories to tell without him actually being Superman.

10 seasons, it’s been a fun ride. Not always a good ride, but always fun. So… I’ll be happy when it’s over, but there will be a hole that I’ve been used to having filled that will be absent for a bit.

I kind of wish it was ending this season so I wouldn’t have to spend a year mostly without Chloe right when she’s at the peak of her awesomeness. (And so that it wouldn’t bypass SG-1 as the longest running sci-fi series in North America.) I mean, how the heck are they going to form the JLA without Watchtower?

Watchtower has been in place for what… 3 seasons now?

I say it’s about time. The show had a second wind in season 8 after they finally wrote out Lana, but with the exception of a handful of “standalone” episodes, the season 9 Zod arc was entirely forgettable. Just, please, producers – secure the rights to finally show him in costume for the series finale! And fly! To the John Williams music! (After ten years, the few remaining loyal fans deserve the payoff.)

(Anyone else notice that the “S” of his suit wasn’t backwards in the season 9 finale, even though it was displayed in reflection?)
