The CW recently hinted that the upcoming ninth season for “Smallville” might not be the last for the popular series.
“I hope it’s not the last season,” network president Dawn Ostroff told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “I think the producers have done a great job coming up with really good storylines this year, but I do think the show still has a lot of life yet to it.”
Part of that new life appears to include the undead. A report on TV Squad says that the Teenager of Steel will do battle with zombies in a season-nine episode called “Rabid.” A virus that turns people into zombies attacks Metropolis and two of the series regulars become infected according to reports.
Meanwhile, Ostroff says the door is still open for Michael Rosenbaum to return as Lex Luthor.
“I wouldn’t rule it out, but I don’t know if it will happen this season,” she said. “I don’t know if we really actually had a conversation with Michael, but I think the idea was to keep the character alive and make his presence really felt.”
“Smallville” returns on Fridays this fall on the CW.

I’m torn. About three-quarters of season 8 was great television, it’s just that the episodes that sucked tended to be grouped around the end of the season. Like the finale–the finale sucked bigtime.
Plus, they’ve got some good guest-stars lined up already for the season. So… I’ll keep watching. For now.

The only reason this show is still on is it is one of only a few shows that doesn’t get completely and utterly decimated in the ratings for the CW.

Unless the writing staff can improve a LOT on last season, I think it’s time to let Smallville go. Nine years is an amazing run, and I’d prefer that they end it on their own terms rather than running it into the ground just because it’s still getting halfway decent ratings. I mean, they can only put off the tights for so long. And they hardly ever actually go to Smallville anymore; it’s mostly Metropolis.
If they want to keep the superhero theme going, maybe they could transition into a live-action Justice League series. They’ve already established most of the key players for that.

“And they hardly ever actually go to Smallville anymore.”
The Luthor mansion is in Smallville, so technically most of the Season 8 episodes were still in Smallville. But yeah, it does seem like most of the stories focus on Metropolis now. Which I think is better.
